This week’s midweek English Football action revolves around the latest round of the EFL Cup or Carabao Cup. We’ve taken a look at Bournemouth vs Norwich, Chelsea vs Derby, and West Ham vs Tottenham, and we’ve free EFL tips for all three matches.
Bournemouth vs Norwich (Tuesday 19.45)
Bournemouth vs Norwich may not exactly be box-office stuff, but both teams have put on some exciting matches in the EFL Cup over the last couple of seasons. Norwich made it through three rounds last season before succumbing to Arsenal, whilst Bournemouth did the same before being beaten by Chelsea. Both team’s matches in the competition also have a habit of producing plenty of goals. Norwich’s three EFL Cup matches this season have produced 15 goals, with no less than four goals in any game.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth have won 3-0 and 3-1, whilst six of their last seven Premier League matches have produced at least three goals, with four of those matches producing six goals. Both teams are also in great form at the moment, with Bournemouth sitting sixth in the Premier League, whilst Norwich sit fourth in the Championship. Bournemouth are probably a fair price at odds-on, but I’d sooner take a bigger price about their being more than 2.5 goals, as well as taking an even bigger price about there being more than 3.5 goals.

Chelsea vs Derby (Wednesday 19.45)
It’s doubtful whether Frank Lampard would have chosen to make his first appearance at Stamford Bridge as a manager at this stage of the EFL Cup, but his return to a club for whom he made over 400 appearances and scored over 100 goals adds another layer to this Wednesday night match. Lampard’s Derby side also arrive in decent form after being unbeaten in their last three away games, whilst they’ve already won three times on their travels in this cup this season, with wins at Oldham, Hull, and Manchester United.
However, new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri seems happy to fight on all fronts at this early stage of the season, and Chelsea also took a big scalp in the previous round by beating Liverpool 2-1. Sarri looks sure to pick a side that can progress to the next round and a Chelsea win is predicted. However, as Derby have nothing to lose and everything to gain, it’s easy to see them grabbing a goal against a Chelsea team that hasn’t kept too many clean sheets at home this season. So, it could be time to bet on Chelsea to win and both teams to score.

West Ham vs Tottenham (Wednesday 19.45)
On Wednesday, it will only be 11 days since Tottenham won 1-0 at West Ham, but the big question is whether Mauricio Pochettino will put out his strongest side with Tottenham battling on so many fronts. He’s targeted this trophy the least in each of the last three seasons, with Tottenham out of the competition before November on each occasion, losing to Arsenal three years ago, Liverpool two years ago, and West Ham last season. The bookies are firmly of the opinion that Pochettino won’t play his best side as, though Tottenham were just 10/11 to beat West Ham in the league, they’re now as big as 17/10 to win this match in 90 minutes.
However, whilst Tottenham had genuine Champions League aspirations in the last few seasons, they’ll surely struggle to make it out of the Champions League Group stages this year. So, as this could be Tottenham’s best chance of a trophy this season, it could be worth taking a gamble that Pochettino will put out a strong enough side to see them win and progress to the next round.
