Who’ll Be Relegated From The Premier League?

Such is the financial impact of relegation, that the fight to retain Premier League status can be even more hard-fought. Therefore, as the 2017/18 Premier League season prepares to kick-off, we thought we’d take at some of the stats, and take a look at the relegation candidates.

How Promoted Sides Have Fared

In the 12 seasons since the 2005/2006 season, only one season has passed in which at least one of the three clubs promoted from the Championship the previous season has not been instantly relegated. On 7 of those occasions only one of three promoted teams were relegated, whilst two of the three promoted teams were relegated on four occasions. However, for those considering backing Newcastle, Brighton and Huddersfield to be relegated, not once have all three promoted teams been gone straight back down.

Second-Season Casualties

That means that 21 promoted teams survived the dreaded drop in the first season back in the Premier League, but hazard a guess how many of those teams survived their second season in the Premier League? A lot more than I thought, with 15 teams staying up for at least a third season in the Premier League, and only 6 teams being relegated.

2017/18 Premier League Relegation Betting

Huddersfield 5/6, Burnley 13/10, Brighton 13/8, Watford 2/1, Swansea 3/1, Newcastle 9/2, Crystal Palace 11/2, West Brom 6/1

Leading Contenders

Huddersfield finished fifth in last season’s Championship, earning their promotion via the play-offs. They’ve spent some money since being promoted, but the fact they finished last season with a minus goal difference means they look vulnerable at best.

Burnley survived last season thanks to the ninth best home record in the Premier League, however teams looked like they had started to work them out towards the end of the season. They also had the second worst away record, collecting just 7 points on their travels.

Brighton may be owned by professional gambler Tony Bloom, but manager Chris Hughton likes to take no chances at the back, and the former Spurs defender’s defence kept a remarkable 21 clean sheets last season. That should stand them in good stead, and it will be interesting to see how they perform in the opening exchanges.

Finished last season in dreadful form, but the arrival of manager Marco Silva is expected to have a massively positive impact on a club who had the 12th best home record and the 15th best away record in last season’s Premier League.

Swansea looked in big trouble for much of last season, but manager Paul Clement kept them in the Premier League with 9 wins in 18 matches as manager. If he manages anything like that return this season, the Swans will stay afloat.

Rafa Benitez guided Newcastle to Championship success last season and, he has the wealth of experience to draw on in the top flight to keep the Magpies flying above the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace

Sam Allardyce kept Palace up last season, and much depends on how new manager Frank de Boer can get his team playing his style of football. I fancy they’ll stay-up, but their price could plummet if they make a slow start.

West Brom

West Brom are potentially interesting at a big-price, as they started last season well, but finished like a lame donkey – so which was the real West Brom? Tony Pulis has yet to take a team down, but there’s a first time for everything.
