Top South American Team Betting – 2018 World Cup
No FIFA World Cup would be complete without a good helping of South American flair, and Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and Peru have all made it to the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia.
However, whilst Brazil have won 5 World Cups, Uruguay 2 and Argentina 1, only one win by a South American team was achieved in Europe.
Therefore, if you want to bet on a South American team at the 2018 World Cup, it may be worth considering betting on them to finish as Top South American Team.
Top South American Team 2018 World Cup Betting: Brazil 5/1, Argentina 9/1, Uruguay 40/1, Colombia 40/1, Peru 250/1
Brazil are the only South American Team to win on a World Cup on European soil, and their record of 5 World Cup wins means they deserve their place at the head of the market. Group E isn’t the easiest looking group, as it contains Serbia, Switzerland and 2014 quarter-finalists Costa Rica, however it will be a major shock if Brazil don’t qualify from Group E and go on to make a big impact in the tournament. They reached the semi-finals in 2014, and the quarter-finals in 2006 and 2010, and their only defeat since 2016 was in a friendly.
Argentina owe their place in the finals to Lionel Messi, as their latest coach Jorge Sampaoli has yet to get the best out of a talented Argentinean squad that lacks harmony. However, Messi managed to drag his teammates all the way to the final in Brazil in 2014, and they managed to make it to the quarter-finals in both 2006 and 2010. Those performances, arguably, give them the edge over Brazil – but the feeling is Brazil are in much the better form of the two, and boast a recent 3-0 win over Argentina.
Uruguay are actually the lowest-ranked of the South American Teams at number 21, but the winners of the 1930 and 1950 World Cups made it to the semi-finals in 2010, and may have gone further than the last-16 in 2014 if Luis Suarez had been better behaved. Suarez will need to be at his best if they are to prove the best South American Team, but are favourites to qualify from Group A, which looks the softest of all 8 of the Final Groups. However, their coach believes they won’t be a force until the next World Cup in 2022.
The Colombians were a delight to watch at Brazil 2014, when they made it to the quarter-finals despite having failed to qualify for the previous 3 World Cups. Their star in 2014 was James Rodriguez, however he will have to find his best form again next season at Bayern Munich, after struggling to have any impact for Real Madrid after moving there from Monaco.
Having not qualified for the finals since 1982, Peru are ranked at 11 in the FIFA Rankings, and qualified courtesy of a mean defence. However, leading striker Paolo Guerrero may be forced to miss the finals, and he will be hard to replace. They are also in France’s Group.
Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia all have world-class stars who are capable of winning any match for them, however Argentina and Colombia seem more reliant on their top-player than Brazil and Uruguay. Therefore, with Uruguay’s coach adamant that we won’t see the best of a crop of good young Uruguayans until 2022 – Brazil look most likely to be the Top South AMerican Team at the 2018 World Cup.
