Top 5 Football Managers Of All Time

Top 5 Football ManagersToday’s football managers are highly-paid individuals, many of which get huge pay-outs for being sacked even after their teams have produced terrible performances and even worse results. So let’s take a quick look at 5 managers who’ve definitely earned their money – and have, arguably, been the 5 most successful managers of all time.

#5 Bob Paisley OBE

Bob Paisley was at Liverpool for an amazing 44-years from player right through to manager – wouldn’t it be nice if loyalty like that still existed in football. He got his just rewards for that loyalty though, leading Liverpool to 6 League Titles, 3 European Cups, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, and 1 Super Cup.

#4 Giovanni Trapattoni

The Italian enjoyed much plenty of success as a player, winning 2 Serie A Titles and 2 European Cups, but they almost pale into insignificance compared to his success as a manager. His teams won titles in Italy, Germany, Portugal and Austria, accumulating 7 Serie A Titles, 1 European Cup, 2 Coppa Italia, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 Supercoppa Italia, 1 Bundesliga, 1 DFB Porkel, 1 DFB Ligaporkel, 1 Primiera Liga, and 1 Austrian Bundesliga.

#3 Ottmar Hitzfeld

After an excellent playing career, Ottmar Hitzfeld made a seamless transition to management. He learned his trade at the Swiss team Grasshoppers, where he claimed 2 Swiss Super Cups, 2 Swiss Cups, and 2 Swiss Super League Titles. He then managed Borussia Dortmund and then Bayern Munich in the Budesliga, where he won 7 League Titles, 2 DFB Super Cups, 3 DFB Pokels, 4 LigaPokels, 1 Intercontinental Cup, and 2 Champions League Titles (1 for both Bayern and Dortmund). His excellent management skills earned him the nickname “Der General”.

#2 Jock Stein CBE

Jock Stein will forever have his place in history as the first British Manager to win the European Cup, which he achieved by steering Celtic to victory in 1967. However, his road to success started with him winning the Scottish Cup with Dunfermline in 1961. He went on to lead Celtic to even more success though, winning 10 Scottish League Titles (9 consecutively between 1966 – 1974), 8 Scottish Cups, and 6 Scottish League Cups. He then left to manage his beloved Scotland in 1978, a role he sadly died performing in 1985.

#1 Alex Ferguson CBE

Whether you love or hate Manchester United, it’s hard to foresee any manager having more success than Alex Ferguson in a world where few managers will ever match his longevity in the role. However, his success story started as Manager of Aberdeen where he won 4 Scottish Cups, 3 Scottish Championships, and the 1983 UEFA Cup. Few would disagree that his days at Manchester United were looking numbered when he won the first of his 5 FA Cups, which were just part of the 38 trophies he lifted at Manchester United, including an amazing 13 Premier league Titles, and two Champions League Trophies.
