Our Copa America 2019 Analysis [Plus 5 FREE Tips]

The 2018 Copa America Football Tournament starts in the early hours of June 15, with the host nation Brazil long-odds on to make a winning start against Bolivia.

The tournament was once designed to find the champions of South America, but the addition of Qatar and Japan have added an intercontinental flavour to this year’s 12-team field.

Brazil are in Group A alongside Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru, whilst Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, and Qatar make up Group B. Meanwhile, Group C comprises Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, and Chile.

Copa America 2019 Outright Betting

Brazil have been installed as the best-priced 6/5 favourites to win Copa America 2019, with Argentina their closest rivals at 7/2. The other two teams priced up at single-figure odds are Uruguay at 7/1 and Colombia at 9/1. Chile are 14/1, and it will be a big shock if any of the other seven teams win, as the bookies are offering priced ranging from 25/1 to 150/1 about them.

Brazil haven’t won any of the last three Copa Americas, which took place in 2011, 2015, and 2016, but they have won the tournament eight times in total. More importantly, they’ve won lifted the trophy on all four previous occasions that the tournament was held in Brazil, with those wins coming in 1919, 1922, 1949, and 1989. They’ve also won in Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. They look to be in the easiest of the three qualifying groups this time, and it will be a shock if they don’t at least reach the final.

Argentina have the best overall record in the competition with 14 wins, but they’ve lost the last four finals they’ve contested, with those losses coming in the last five renewals. Brazil beat them in the first two of those finals, but it is Chile who have won the last two editions of the Copa America, winning both finals after penalty shootouts against the Argentineans.

If you’re looking for an each-way punt, Chile could be the value at 14/1, but Brazil’s 100% home record in the tournament makes them worthy favourites.

Copa America Opening Matches

Venezuela vs Peru (Saturday 15 June)

Venezuela and Peru are probably fighting for second behind Brazil in Group A, which makes the significance of this opening match even more important. The two teams have met in the tournament four times this century, with Peru winning in 2004, 2011, and 2015, whilst Venezuela won in 2007.

However, the pair have met more recently in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, with both matches ending 2-2. That makes the 4/1 about there being more than 3.5 goals look an interesting bet, whilst you can have 18/1 about another 2-2 draw.

Argentina vs Colombia (Saturday 15 June)

The two teams met in the Copa America in 2011 and 2015, with the score finishing 0-0 on both occasions. That was again the score when the two teams met in a friendly in Colombia in 2018.

In between those matches, Argentina and Colombia played each other in World Cup qualifying, when Argentina proved the better team with a 1-0 win in Colombia and a 3-0 win at home.

The most obvious fact in those five matches is that Colombia haven’t managed to score a single goal against Argentina, and that makes the 9/10 on offer about both teams not to score very appealing. Even the general 4/5 looks well worth taking if you can’t get on at the bigger price.

Three scoreless draws in the last five Argentina vs Colombia head-to-heads also suggest that some bookies may be being generous by offering 7/1 about the correct score being 0-0, and that also looks worth a punt.
