Euro 2016 Group F Preview

Christiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the start attraction of Group F on and off the pitch, rather than any of the four teams which are Portugal, Austria, Iceland and Hungary.

Euro 2016 Group F

Portugal

An early exit at the 2014 World Cup sparked enthusiasm for Portugal to start a rebuilding program and bring in new blood however, after losing their first qualifying game against Albania, new manager Fernando Santos brought back many of the old guard. The experience they brought saw them win all of their remaining qualifying games, but this side have been here and failed before. However, they’re 4 wins from 4 games against their Group F opponents, and did beat Belgium in a recent friendly.

Austria

Austria announced themselves as a team that shouldn’t be underestimated by anyone after winning 9 of their 10 games in qualifying, and they have plenty of players who play in the Budesliga, including their star-player David Alaba. They have lost friendlies against Holland and Turkey this year though, and have yet to win a match against Portugal, Iceland or Hungary. However, they’ve only played Iceland once (draw), whilst they lost their only game against Hungary, and have yet to play Portugal.

Iceland

Iceland beat Holland twice to make it through qualifying and, whilst that’s not be sniffed at, those results have looked a flash in the pan of late. Recent victories over Liechenstein and Greece are nothing to write home about, and defeats by Norway and Denmark suggests they won’t make it out of the group. They’ve also lost both previous games against Portugal, and all four games against Hungary, whilst they drew their only game with Austria.

Hungary

Hungary are probably the luckiest side to have made it to Euro 2016, as they had the lowest number of points in qualifying, and the worst goal-difference. They finished third behind Northern Ireland and Romania, and their defeat of Norway over two legs in the play-offs was thanks to the brilliant goalkeeping of Gabor Kiraly, though even a repeat of those heroics are unlikely to see them past the group stages. However, they have managed a couple of friendly draws against Croatia and the Ivory Coast this year, whilst they have also won all 5 previous games against Iceland and Austria.

Euro 2016 Group F Summary

Group F may well prove to be the weakest group, and Portugal and Austria are expected to go through to the knockout stages. Portugal obviously have the most proven match winner in Ronaldo and, though I don’t think they’ll go far in the knockout stages, he just tips the balance in their favour over Austria in regards to topping the group.
