Euro 2016 Group A Preview
Euro 2016 kicks-off in France on Friday 10th June, and it’s time to take a look at the tournament – starting with a preview of Group A, which consists of hosts France, Switzerland, Romania and Albania.
Euro 2016 Group A Betting
France 4/11, Switzerland 9/2, Romania 11/1, Albania 27/1
The hosts have a decent record when hosting major tournaments, and it’s no surprise to see that the improving young side have been installed as favourites, with Paul Pogba expected to be one of the stars of the show. However, their record against their 3 group opponents isn’t that compelling. They’ve played a total of 15 matches against them, winning 5, drawing 9, and losing one to Albania. Recent form in friendlies has been very solid though, beating Holland, Russia, Cameroon and Scotland in succession.
The Swiss don’t have an enviable record having won only 1 of their 9 matches at the finals of past tournaments, but this must be their best opportunity yet of qualifying from the group stages. Shaqiri and Xhaka will need to influence the midfield though and, though England beat them twice in qualifying, they did take Argentina to extra-time in the World Cup in Brazil. They’ve played 12 games against the group opposition, winning 4, drawing 4 and losing 4, though they’ll have to improve on their recent form having won just one of their four friendlies this year.
Romania had a very solid defence in qualifying, which does mean they were pretty boring to watch, but they do have a decent record against the other three teams in their 11 head-to-heads, winning 4, drawing 6, and losing just once to France in 5 matches against the hosts. Surprisingly, they scored 5 recently against Georgia, whilst a draw against Spain shows just what they can do if they put their minds to it.
Much will rest on the shoulders of Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj, and the Albanians were possibly one of the luckiest sides to qualify having beaten a Portuguese side that was without Christian Ronaldo, and having been awarded 3 points from their away match with Serbia after an on-field brawl. They were also the lowest scorers to qualify, averaging less than a goal a game. Meanwhile their record against the other three teams reads 1 win, 4 draws, and 8 losses, whilst in their recent friendlies they have beaten Luxembourg and Albania, but were no match for Austria or the Ukraine.
Euro 2016 Group A Summary
Despite only having an average record against their 3 group opponents, it will be a major disappointment if France can’t top the group, though whether you want to back them to win the group, or put them in your accumulators at 4/11, is a different question. The battle for second is perhaps more interesting, with Switzerland at 6/4 and Romania at 11/4, and the Romanians look the better value. As the 4 best third-placed teams will also qualify for the knockout stages, the 5/6 for Romanians to qualify also looks decent value.
