EFL Cup Third Round

The third-round of this season’s EFL Cup (formerly the League Cup) has thrown-up four all-Premier League matches, with Leicester hosting Chelsea in the potential highlight on Tuesday Night. Meanwhile, we can look forward to three matches on Wednesday Night as Southampton take on Crystal Palace, Manchester City travel to Swansea, and Stoke try and get their season back on track as they take on Hull.

EFL Cup Third Round

Leicester vs Chelsea (Tuesday 7.45)

Chelsea have had the better of previous cup matches between the two teams, but in the only one Leicester had home advantage in (1996/97 FA Cup) Leicester held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw before losing the replay. Meanwhile, Leicester also won their home match last season in the Premier League, whilst also drawing away at Chelsea. Chelsea did make the better start this season with 3 straight wins, but a draw against Swansea and defeat to Liverpool has shown they’re vulnerable to a team with pace, which Leicester certainly have in abundance. Leicester are also full of confidence after consecutive 3-0 wins, and are undefeated at home so far this season – all of which makes Chelsea look a lay at 2.14.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace (Wednesday 7.45)

Southampton stopped their early season woes with a Premier League win over Swansea and a European win over Sparta Prague this week, and they’ve won the last 3 renewals of this fixture. However, in between those 3 wins, they’ve lost two FA Cup ties at home to Crystal Palace, making it 4 successive cup defeats in all. Palace will also arrive confident after two straight wins. Making them look the value bet.

Swansea vs Manchester City (Wednesday 7.45)

Last year’s League Cup champions Manchester City have started the season in fine style and, even if this competition isn’t at the top of their new manager’s priorities, they still have a squad capable of beating a Swansea side who have already lost at home to Hull this season. However, with Man City handing out a few thumpings, the value bet may be for there to be more than 3.5 goals.

Stoke vs Hull (Wednesday 7.45)

Stoke have endured a tough start to the season, whilst Hull have made a better than expected start despite woes of having a depleted squad. Stoke have won their 3 home matches against Hull though, and this looks their easiest game of the season so far. However, as the last 6 renewals of this fixture have all produced less than 2.5 goals, the 4/5 to make that 7 looks the value.
