2018 World Cup Finals – Group A Betting
Football Fans around the globe will no doubt bet an absolute fortune on the 2018 World Cup and, whilst many of those bets will be in support of their own team, there are also loads of other exciting markets to bet on.
One such market is to pick the winners of each group as, as well as been betting opportunities in their own right, picking the 8 Group Winners may also help you when analysing the draw to see who your team may face in the latter stages if progressing from the Group-Stage. So, we thought we’d start with Group A.
2018 World Cup Finals Group A Betting Guide
Uruguay 6/5, Russia 7/4, Egypt 6/1, Saudi Arabia 40/1
Uruguay have by far the best World Cup pedigree of the teams in Group A as, not only did they win the first World Cup in 1930, but they also won again in 1950. Those victories may seem a lifetime ago, but they’ve also reached the semi-finals in 1954, 1970 and 2010. Add in a quarter-final in 1966, and Last-16 appearances in 1986, 1990 and 2014, and it’s easy to see why they’re the bookies favourites to win the 2018 World Cup’s Group A. However, they did fail to make it to the Knockout Stages in 1962, 1974 and 2010. The last time they topped their qualifying group was in 2010, though that was the fourth time they have topped their group.
Russia have also topped their World Cup Finals Qualifying Group on four occasions, but the last time they did so was back in 1986, when they made it to the last-16. However, despite reaching the later stages of the competition several times as the Soviet Union, Russia have failed to make it past the Group Stages on their last 4 World Cup Finals appearances, in 1990, 1994, 2002 and 2014. They were especially disappointing in 2014 when Belgium and Algeria qualified ahead of them, and have done little to right the ship having slipped to number 64 in the FIFA World Ranking since.
Egypt are even harder to make a case for as they have exited at the Group Stage on their two World Cup Final appearances in 1934 and 1990. However, they are the World Number 31 Ranked Team, and have a real goal-scorer in the shape of Liverpool Striker Mohamed Salah.
Saudi Arabia are the whipping boys at 40/1 to win Group A, but they did make the knockout stages in 1994 having beaten Belgium and Morocco. They’ve not been as good since though, having lost 7 and drawn 2 of their 9 matches at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cup Finals.
Before the World Cup Finals Draw was made, you’d probably have got decent odds about any of these 4 teams topping a Group. However, someone must top what is a really weak group. Uruguay look the obvious bet as, not only are they the highest-ranked team, but they also have the best World Cup Record.
