Form and Predictions
This group 1 race is run over 1600m and is an open handicap.
Heading the weights and appearing at the top of the list is the Australian iron horse HARTNELL. This bloke has won many varying distances and has raced competitively from 1400m right up to 3200m, running third in a Melbourne Cup. He is still very competitive as an 8 year old now, and I think he will be there in the top three or four, come the finish line.
The main danger appears to be the last start Group 1 winner LAND OF PLENTY, who won the Toorak Handicap three weeks ago in rather impressive fashion. That was a long overdue top grade success for the horse and I believe he can go on with it.
Other top chances include CLIFF’S EDGE. This is another horse who likes Flemington a great deal, and to his advantage he runs on the speed, sometimes taking the lead and setting himself up as a sitting duck coming down the home straight. He’s a much more wiley horse as a four-year-old than what he was as a three-year-old last season, so I think he’s learned a few tricks since then.
Three horses from upstate New South Wales: SIEGE OF QUEBEC, LE ROMAIN and COMIN’ THROUGH are all capable but have shown better form in soft to heavy conditions, like what they get up in Sydney. In his earlier career, Le Romain has actually won on this track and at this distance so should be respected because of that.
The track is expected to be a good 3 so that will count against a few horses, who would prefer the sting out of the ground.
