First Mohican To Scalp Rivals

Posted May 31, 2014 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

It’s a relatively quiet weekend of sport, but there are still some great betting opportunities to be had at York and Haydock today; in our bid to boost our betting bank for next month’s Derby, US Open and World Cup.

Horse Racing – York – Saturday

Peter Niven sends Clever Cookie in a quest to see whether he stays the Ebor trip, but his stable-star is rated 12lb inferior to likely favourite First Mohican. It may be that Clever Cookie could finish 4th or 5th here and still have run well, whilst his shrewd trainer protects his handicap mark for the big race in August. If that’s the case, First Mohican should be good enough to take this, especially with his trainer’s string in fine form. He also ran Mount Athos to 1¼-lengths on ground too fast for him last year.

First Mohican each-way 4/1 or better

Horse Racing – Haydock – Saturday

Cubanita’s last run may not have been her best, but finishing 11th of 12 runners in the Yorkshire Cup wasn’t that bad, especially when she blatantly appeared not to stay the 14-furlong trip. She’d also not performed to her best on her other run at York, and she can be fancied to return to winning ways despite carrying a penalty for winning the John Porter at Newbury (where she had none other than Noble Mission behind). Whilst most of the opposition looks exposed, John Gosden (who knows a thing or two about training high-class fillies) could have found easier opportunities for the once-raced SULTANINA and, despite having to find 23lb on official ratings, she may give Cubanita most to think about.

Cubanita win 7/2 or better

The booking of Pat Smullen for some of Richard Fahey’s Haydock runners looks significant, and the top-rated Garswood must have every chance of winning his first race since last year’s Lennox Stakes at Goodwood. Front-running Penitent looks sure to make this a true test, whilst the Frankie Dettori ridden Eton Forever and the first-time Keiran Fallon ridden Tawahid look likely to make Garswood work hard.

Garswood each-way 4/1 or better

3.15

The booking of Richard Hughes for last year’s Wokingham winner York Glory suggests that Kevin Ryan’s charge is ready to run a big race, but the Wokingham was run at breakneck pace on fast ground; conditions which seemed to suit this hold-up performer perfectly. Ten runners and soft ground certainly don’t rule him out, but a chance is taken on Kieran Fallon galvanising Steps in a race that may be run to suit Roger Varian’s soft-ground loving sprinter.

Steps each-way 7/1 or better

3.50

Whether or not the Fahey/Smullen combination have been successful earlier on the card, Parbold looks sure to run a big race despite the 6-furlong trip looking a minimum for him. 5lb well in at the weights, due to penalties carried by Shamson and Mick’s Yer Man, he should account for that pair, whilst the Richard Hughes ridden Aeolus may give him the most to do.

Parbold win 2/1 or better
