Spain became the first team to win two tournaments in succession in 2012, and now set-out on their hat-trick bid in a group that also contains Croatia, Turkey and the Czech Republic.

Euro 2016 Group D

Spain

Spain’s failure to qualify for the knockout stages at the 2014 World Cup saw some young blood added to the squad alongside some seasoned campaigners, but that hasn’t stopped them losing friendlies to France and Germany since. Draws against Italy and Romania were below par performances too, though 9 goals in their last 2 friendlies shows they may have done their fine-tuning just in time. They’ve also won all their games against their group opposition.

Croatia

There’s no doubting that Croatia have the talent to beat any team on their day, and they’ve finished first or second in their group on all four occasions they’ve qualified for the finals, reaching the quarter-finals twice. Meanwhile, they’re 0 from 2 against Spain, 1 from 1 against the Czech Republic, whilst they’ve won 1 and drawn 3 of their 4 games against Turkey. Their recent 10-0 annihilation of San Marino means they’ll come here on a high though.

Turkey

The Turks looked in trouble after losing their first two qualifying games but, after remaining undefeated in their final 8 qualifying games, they managed to qualify as the best third-placed side. They’ve continued that run in their recent friendlies, with Austria amongst their victims, though did lose to England. They also don’t have the best record against their group opposition, as they’ve lost both games to Spain, won just 2 of 6 against the Czech Republic, and are 0 from 4 against Croatia.

Czech Republic

The Czech’s games may well provide some of the highlights of the tournament, as they tend to produce plenty of goals thanks to their attacking ethos. It was an ethos that saw them top a qualifying group that contained Iceland, Turkey and Holland, and they’re a team who should mean that Group D is one to tune into. Negatives are their poor records against Spain and Croatia, whilst friendly defeats by Scotland and South Korea highlight their potential defensive frailties.

Euro 2016 Group D Summary

Spain’s early 2014 World Cup exit means that they’re probably slightly bigger than they should be at 4/6 to top the group, and I wouldn’t put anyone off backing them or throwing them in an acca. However, if you think that Spain will definitely top the group, then the 15/8 for Croatia to finish second at 15/8 looks even better value.
