British fans, and probably many others, will be cheering on Northern Ireland in Group C at Euro 2016, but most eyes will be on Germany who are second favourites to lift the trophy at a best-priced 9/2. Poland and the Ukraine complete the Group C line-up.
Euro 2016 Group C Betting
Germany 5/11, Poland 9/2, Ukraine 17/2, Northern Ireland 28/1
Germany will be hoping to emulate France who won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 Euros, and Spain who won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Euros. They’ve not been far away in the last two championships, reaching the 2008 final and the 2012 semi-finals, and the team will be much the same as the one that lifted the World Cup, with the exception of the retired Lahm. Doubters will point to the fact that they’ve been beaten several times in the interim, but they usually step it up a gear for the big occasion. They’ve also won 4, drawn 3 and lost just 1 of their 8 previous games against their group opposition.
With goal-scoring machine Robert Lewandowski leading the line, Poland will have high-hopes of at least qualifying from the group. How far they’ll go in the knockouts is debatable, but they did beat Germany in qualifying. However, that was their only win against Germany in 6 games, whilst they’ve yet to beat the Ukraine in 4 games, and have beaten Northern Ireland just twice in four games.
Despite only qualifying through the play-offs, the Ukraine will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament, and that’s because they have a fantastic record against their group opponents. They’ve won 3 and drawn 1 against Poland, drawn their only encounter with Germany, and drawn both their games against Northern Ireland. They conceded just 4 goals in qualifying, and have also won all four of their friendlies this year.
Getting to the finals was a dream for Northern Ireland players and fans alike, but it’s a dream that is expected to end at the group-stage. Just 1 win in 7 against the other teams in the group highlights their dilemma, though no doubt we’ll all be rooting for them.
Euro 2016 Group C Summary
Germany are expected to pass their opening test with flying colours, and the most interesting angle may well be who will come second to them. Poland are slight favourites to finish second in the group but, as the Ukraine have such a good record against them, they look the bet at 19/10.
