Euro 2016 Group B Preview

Few groups will have Britain in so much excitement as Group B at the Euro 2016 Tournament, and that’s because England and Wales will both be hoping to qualify for the knockout stages from it. However, Russia and Slovakia will be no pushovers.

Euro 2016 Group B

England

The jingoism conjured-up by England’s perfect 10 from 10 qualifying campaign, also registering the best goal difference of any team in qualifying, has been knocked since after some less than popular performances with the public and the press. However, defeats by Spain and Holland weren’t the end of the world, and wins over Turkey, Australia and Portugal were at least wins as Roy Hodgson tinkered with different possible attacking combinations. They’ve also got decent recent records against their group opponents, winning 8 of the 9 games against them and losing just one.

Russia

A mid-qualifying change of managers did the trick as Russia won their last four games, scoring 12 goals and conceding just one goal in those games. However, they couldn’t maintain that progression in this year’s friendlies, with defeats against France and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, their record against the group opposition reads played 11, won 6, drawn 3, lost 2.

Wales

Any chance Wales have of qualifying surely rests squarely at the feet of Gareth Bale, who scored 7 of the 11 goals Wales put in the net during qualifying. However, whilst giving the ball to Bale will be manager Chris Coleman’s game-plan, he also knows that his well-marshalled defence will have to stand fast, which it has failed to do in this year’s friendlies against Sweden, Holland and the Ukraine. Their record against the opposition is also poor, having played 10, won 1, drawn 1 and lost 8.

Slovakia

Beating Spain in qualifying was their highlight and, though they were the first team to do that in 8 years, their final qualifying games and their recent friendly performances have been below par. Losing to Germany was expected, but draws against the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland highlight their limitations. They’re also 0 from 3 against England, have won just 1 of 5 against Russia, and 1 of 2 against Wales.

Euro 2016 Group B Summary

England boast 100% records against Wales and Slovakia, and maintaining those records will be enough to see them into the knockout stages, however that’s just a measly best-priced 1/10. Therefore, perhaps more with patriotic heart, than headstrong conviction – the 11/13 that they win the group is the bet as, they do have an 8 from 9 record against their opposition, and I think any of the others could qualify alongside them.
