The 2019 Copa America has reached the knockout stages and the eight quarter-finalists will go head to head on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June in Brazil.
The host nation plays Paraguay in the early hours of Friday morning, with Argentina taking on Venezuela on Friday evening. The best-looking match of the quarter-finals between Colombia and Chile takes place in the early hours of Saturday morning, and Uruguay take on Peru in the last quarter-final on Saturday evening.
Brazil vs Paraguay (Fri 28th @ 01:30bst)
Brazil topped Group A with the minimum of fuss. Venezuela may have held them to a 0-0 draw, but Brazil raised their game to a higher-level to beat Peru in their third group match to clinch top spot and guarantee they played one of the best third-placed qualifiers.
That team is Paraguay, who qualified in third place in Group B. However, draws with Argentina and Qatar showed they were no pushovers, whilst even Colombia only beat them 1-0. They’ve also drawn two of their last three games against Brazil.
But the most important pointer could be the last match between the two sides, which saw Brazil win 3-0 in Brazil in World Cup Qualifying. Brazil have kept three clean sheets so far in the competition and a win to nil at odds of around 4/6 looks a fair bet.
Venezuela vs Argentina (Fri 28th @ 20:00bst)
It’s hard to know what to make of Argentina, who did enough to qualify in second place in Group B with a win over Qatar, after losing to Colombia and drawing with Paraguay in their opening two games. They have a depth of world-class players, but they’ve drawn two and lost one of their last three games against Venezuela.
It’s possible that Messi could carry Argentina into the semi-finals, but they certainly don’t look a value bet at around 3/5 against a Venezuelan team that are unbeaten so far in Copa America 2019, with two draws and a win over Bolivia. That makes the draw looks the obvious value at around 3/1.
Colombia vs Chile (Sat 29th @ 00:00bst)
Colombia were the only team to win all three games in the group stages of Copa America 2019 and they did it without conceding a goal.
Reigning Copa America Champions Chile also started in fine style with a 4-0 win over Japan, but a 2-1 win over Ecuador and a 1-0 defeat by Uruguay showed that they’re probably not as good a team as they were in 2016.
Chile’s failure to find the net against Uruguay, when a win would have guaranteed them an easier semi-final, suggests that this could be a low-scoring game. There have also been two goals or less in the last three Chile vs Colombia head to heads, which produced two draws and a 2-0 win for Chile.
Those results also suggest that this could go either way, so a bet on there being less than 2.5 goals may be the answer.
Uruguay vs Peru (Sat 29th @ 20:00bst)
Both teams had four points after two group games but, whilst Peru were mauled 5-0 by Brazil in their final game, Uruguay outbattled Chile to top Group C.
However, both teams won their home games in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, with Uruguay winning 1-0 and Peru 2-1.
But it’s Uruguay who look to have a great combination of young talent and a variety of experienced players to bring them on. They also have a much greater depth of experience when it comes to the knockout stages of major tournaments and they are expected to just get the better of Peru over 90-minutes.
