Community Shield History, Statistics And Best Bets

Posted August 6, 2016 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

The Community Shield (Sunday 7th August) is the traditional Premier League curtain-raiser played between the previous season’s Premier League winners and the winners of the FA Cup, which this year are Leicester and Manchester United.

Community Shield

It started life as the Charity Shield in the 1908/09 season, since when the proceeds of the game have been given to charities or, as they are now called, Community Initiatives. The proceeds are divided-up between 124 teams, who donate them to charities of their choice, and various FA National Charity Partners.

But enough of the history – let’s take a look at some of the important stuff.

Match Betting

Manchester United 10/11, Draw 27/10, Leicester 7/2

Previous Community Shield Records

As you’d expect, the two teams have very different Community Shield records.

Manchester United are top of the pile when it comes to winning the Community Shield with a total of 20 victories, 5 more than nearest rivals Liverpool, and 6 more than Arsenal. They’ve also played in 10 this century, winning 6 of them and losing 4.

Meanwhile, Leicester can boast a 100% record in the Community Shield, winning their only appearance in 1971.

Manchester United Appearances This Century

As Manchester United have played in 10 Community Shields this century, it looks worth taking a closer look at them.

The last 3 Manchester United victories were won with score-lines of 2-0, 3-2, and 3-1, however the three previous victories all ended-up draws at full-time with Manchester United going on to win on penalties on each occasion. Meanwhile, the scores in their four defeats were 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 2-2.

Jose Mourinho And The Community Shield

Another interesting fact is that Jose Mourinho steered Chelsea to the Community Shield in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2015 – but only lifted the trophy in 2005.

Recent Head To Heads

The first thing to note is the two teams have never previously met on a neutral ground. However, they have met a total of 117 times, with Manchester United winning 58 of those matches, Leicester 32, whilst 27 have been drawn.

However, both matches between the two teams ended 1-1 last season, whilst the previous season’s matches were won by Leicester 5-3 (at home) and Manchester United 3-1 (at home).

Community Shield Best Bets

United look sure to be a more organised team under Mourinho this season, but it may well take a few more matches before they completely gel. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Leicester can come anywhere near to repeating their heroics of last year with the loss of Kante potentially a big blow, despite acquiring some decent looking signings themselves.

Therefore, with both of last season’s games ending in a draw, the draw may well prove the value-bet in 90-minutes. Meanwhile, the more adventurous may want to go one step further and back Manchester United to win on penalties, being as they’re 3 from 3 in previous Community Shield penalty shoot-outs.

Totally agree, Mourinho will not have United ready just yet and the value is the draw over 90 minutes. This is my first football bet of the season but I will be backing Manchester United this term to improve on their 50% win rate of last season in the Premier League.
