The Challow Novice Hurdle (Newbury, Saturday 1.50) is a Grade-1 race run over 2-miles 5-furlongs and 10 hurdles. There are no major statistics to use as pointers.
8 runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Challow Novice Hurdle.
Steadily improved this season, but a mark of 137 looks a fair reflection of his abilities after his runner-up finish to Wholestone last-time.
Unknown quantity after his 6-length win on debut for Gordon Elliott, though the second and third have been beaten similar margins again since. Any amount of improvement possible, though may well be a sighter to see how the Irish form compares to the English form for trainer who has a lot of high-class arrows to fire at the major festivals later in the season.
The only trainer and jockey to have won renewals in the last 10 years, of the represented connections, team-up here. However, Cultivator looked to get outstayed over 19-furlongs by Messire Des Obeaux and he’s not sure to benefit from a step-up in trip. Also ran poorly in a bumper here.
Won both hurdle races for in-form Colin Tizzard, though form not boosted since. Also may be more of a chaser for the future, but not ruled-out with staying-nature of Newbury likely to suit.
Neither flat-rating or hurdle-rating give much hope of victory, and looks rightful outsider.
Messire Des Obeaux
Won both hurdle races this season in the style of a stayer, and this extra 2-furlongs at Newbury looks sure to suit him. Holds a few of these on collateral form too, whilst trainer is 8 from 19 over the Christmas Period.
Peak To Peak
One from one for Paul Nicholls, but needs to find plenty of improvement on bare form of that win. Second and third have been beaten further since, with the third beaten an extra 20-lengths by Messire Des Obeaux.
Created a big impression on two hurdle starts this year but, whilst the runner-ups from both those races won both their next two starts, they were at odds-on against average opposition. Both wins were also on good, and needs to prove he can handle softer ground – though will have a big say if he does.
Challow Hurdle Summary
Robin Roe could be decent but, with questions about going and stamina, the value looks to be Messire Des Obeaux as he handles the ground, looks sure to be suited by the step-up in trip at a staying-track, and his trainer is in excellent form.
Tip: Messire Des Obeaux @ 4/1 (Paddy Power, Skybet)
