Canelo Alvarez Vs Gennady Golovkin
In the early hours of tomorrow morning (Sunday), we will witness two of the greatest boxers in today’s era come face to face to what should be a barn storm! Mexico’s Saul Canelo Alvarez will challenge World middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin for the chance to become the face of boxing.
Whilst last month’s bout between Mayweather and McGregor caught the attention of millions of people around the world, this fight between Canelo and GGG will be the “real fight of the year”.
As soon as both boxers hear the first bell, there’s no going back, with everything on the line. Canelo comes to the ring with a record of 49 wins, 1 draw, and only 1 loss, courtesy of Floyd Mayweather, which is an incredible boxing record! On the other hand, Golovkin is an unbeaten fighter, with a record consisting of 37 wins, with 33 of those victories coming way of knockout.
Since the departure of Floyd Mayweather from the sport, there has been a struggle for boxers to become the “face of boxing”, with no competitor standing out amongst the rest.
Hall of Fame boxer, and current promoter, Bernard Hopkins had said:
“The winner of this fight earns the position to be the face of boxing,”
“He can be what Ali was, what Mike Tyson was, what Oscar was. It’s not just about being a champion, it’s bigger.”
The winner of this fight may be able to interest the casual boxing fans and general sport fans too, bringing a vast amount of interest back into boxing.
Whilst Canelo has a fabulous record, and has challenged Mayweather, he somewhat avoided the chance to fight Golovkin last year, which allowed fans to brand him as a coward. With the addition of losing to Mayweather, it also let everyone down, despite him having wins over other top fighters.
Another Hall of Fame boxer, Oscar de la Hoya, said that “he took the Mayweather fight too soon” and “but the progress that he has made has been incredible.”
With Golovkin, he has fought many well-rounded fighters and knocked out most of his opposition, but none that have been world class. With everything in mind, this fight will truly test both fighters, and allow us to build a stronger case for the winner to be the new “face of boxing”.
Whilst current bookies favour Golovkin for the victory, many fans and boxing experts can’t choose between the two fighters, especially due to it being a fantastic 50/50 fight.
On the fight, Canelo has said:
On paper, obviously, it’s going to rival some of those big fights . . . but it really depends how the fight comes out, how it pans out,”
“I’m going to do my part to make it memorable so I can go down in history as one of the best fighters.”
Meanwhile, Golovkin stated that:
“I want to win this fight,” Golovkin said, “because maybe for me this win will be like a history fight, like [Sugar Ray] Leonard vs. [Marvin] Hagler. Like middleweight division, I believe the boxing division will come back.”
Boxing has made us wait for a truly 50/50 mega fight, with the Mayweather vs Pacquaio fight being the last one, however that turned out to be a disappointment, so let’s hope that this super fight lives up to expectations.
