The furthest that Belgium have ever got at a World Cup is the semi-finals in 1986. Since then they have failed to qualify in 2006 and 2010, exited at the Group Stage in 1998, and made it no further than the Last-16 in 1990, 1994 and 2002. However, having assembled what is probably the best Belgian Football Squad ever, they made it to the quarter-finals at Rio 2014, when they succumbed 1-0 to Argentina. Therefore, the big question is how far will Belgium go at the 2018 World Cup?
Belgium Stage Of Elimination 2018 World Cup Betting: 7/1 Group Stage, 5/2 Last-16, 3/1 Quarter-Finals, 11/2 Semi-Finals, 8/1 Runner-Up, 12/1 Winner
Belgium have been drawn in Group G with England, Tunisia and Panama, and FIFA’s World Ranked Number 5 Team have rightly been installed as the favourites to win the group. The Belgians were deadly in World Cup Qualifying, winning 9 and drawing 1 of their 10 games, and scoring 43 goals and conceding just 6 goals in the process. Unlike many teams, they also changed managers early enough to have a positive impact, with Roberto Martinez appointed after Belgium’s unsatisfactory exit at the Euro 2016.
Admittedly, winning games against the likes of Greece, Bosnia Herzegovina, Estonia, Cyprus and Gibraltar was expected of the Belgians, but this vital match practice has given Martinez time to gel several outstanding individuals into a team. It’s team that will include, barring injury, creative geniuses Eden Hazard and Kevin Du Bruyne, two players who could provide striker Romelu Lukaku with better service than he’s currently getting at Manchester United.
Belgium also won all 3 group games in Rio though, and world number 27 Tunisia or world number 55 Panama aren’t expected to cause the Belgians any problems.
England have a decent record against the Belgians though. The first 4 matches between the two sides resulted in draws, including matches at the 1954 World Cup, 1980 European Championships, and the 1990 World Cup. They also drew their first friendly in 1998, before England won friendlies in 1999 and 2012.
However, whatever the result against England, Belgium should amass enough points to avoid exiting at the group stage.
Beyond that, it’s hard to predict the draw for the latter stages. England could top the group, which theoretically could give Belgium a tougher Last-16 Draw. Therefore, the 5/2 with Bet365 for a Last-16 exit is tempting, especially as the next-best price in the marketplace is currently 11/8. At this point, it’s worth noting that Belgium have made it to the quarter-finals of the last two major championships, and there will probably be plenty of support at 3/1 for the Belgians to exit at the Quarter-Finals Stage once more.
However, as there’s a strong possibility that Belgium could be a better team this time around, especially if Du Bruyne and Hazard continue to play well, the Belgians may be value to make it to the semi-finals.
