Can Argentina Win The 2018 World Cup?
Published on 16/12/17
It’s no surprise to see Argentina at single-figures to win the 2018 World Cup, as they were crowned champions in both 1978 and 1986. They also boast numerous high-profile finishes, including finishing runner-up in both the first World Cup and the last World Cup at Rio 2014, whilst they were quarter-finalists in 2006 and 2010.
However, whilst the FIFA World Number 4 Ranked Team is a general 9/1 to be crowned Champions in Russia in 2018, you can back them to be eliminated at a variety of stages if you don’t think they’ll win the World Cup.
Argentina Stage Of Elimination 2018 World Cup Betting Guide:
Group Stage 6/1, Last-16 9/4, Quarter-Finals 10/3, Semi-Finals 17/2, Runner-up 11/2, Winner 9/1
Of course, the first thing on Argentina’s agenda will be qualifying from their Group, and it’s a group that contains Iceland, Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria.
Argentina, as they have the maestro that is Lionel Messi, always have a chance no matter what the opposition, but it’s worth remembering that qualification for the 2018 World Cup didn’t come without its struggles. Whilst Messi continues to give his all without question, that can’t always be said about other Argentinean Stars such as Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero. Argentina have also sacked two coaches in the last year, and latest coach Jorge Sampaoli had done little to stop the rot with just one win in four matches that weren’t friendlies.
Iceland probably don’t have the class to trouble an inform Argentinean Team, but they’re certainly rough enough and tough enough to make things difficult if Argentina aren’t up for it. The Icelandic fans will also get on the backs of the Argentineans if they show weakness, and the Thunderclap Chant may start a few rumblings.
Croatia are always feared and, though they’ve yet to win either of the big trophies, they did finish third at the 1998 World Cup. They also have players capable of mixing it with the best players in the world in Perisic, Rakitic, Mandzukic and Modric, and could easily upset Argentina at the first hurdle, despite needing a late surge to get through qualifying.
Meanwhile, Nigeria were convincing qualifiers after coming through a group that contained fellow African hopefuls Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia – making it 5 World Cup Finals appearances out of 6 for the Super Eagles. They’ve scored 4 against Cameroon this year, and 4 against Russia, and they’re attacking talent could help them cause an upset against anyone.
Argentina are as short as 1/2 to win Group D, but making it to the knockout stages might not be quite as easy as those odds suggest. However, as they play the outsiders of the group Iceland first, they may get off to a good start. There’s also a chance that their last-16 opposition may be one of the weaker teams – but they may look vulnerable at the quarter-final stages if Messi can’t carry them single-handedly. Having also gone out in the quarter-finals in 2006 and 2010 – 10/3 for a Quarter-Final elimination may offer the best value.
