Can Anyone Destroy Djokovic’s Dominance?

Posted January 11, 2016 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

The eagerly awaited first Tennis Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, will take place between the 18th and the 31st January – and the big question on everyone’s lips is can anyone stop Novak Djokovic continuing his dominance of world tennis?

Novak Djokovic

The Serb dominated the 2015 season, especially on hard-courts, and after opening his season with a stylish victory 6-1 6-2 victory in the final of the ATP Doha we’ve decided to take a look at his recent record against the rest of the world’s top-10 (with the exception of Richard Gasquet who may be forced to miss the Australian Open through injury).

Andy Murray

World number 2 Murray will be hoping that Davis Cup victory will inspire him to more new achievements, starting with an Australian Open Title, but 10 defeats in his last 11 head-to-head with Djokovic doesn’t bode well for his chances this year. He’s also already lost 3 Australian Open final to Djokovic.

Roger Federer

Despite claiming 4 Australian Open Titles, Federer hasn’t been in the final here since 2010, and the slow courts here are a disadvantage to him against the likes of Djokovic. The Swiss maestro has also failed to win any of his recent really important matches against Djokovic, only beating him in Dubai and a round-robin match at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Wawrinka

If there’s a man who can – then it has to be Stan! And the Swiss player boasts two Grand Slam victories over Djokovic in the last two years, in two tournaments he went on to win, including the 2014 Australian Open. Could be a tough nut to crack.

Nadal

The Spanish wizard underwent a resurgence towards the end of 2015 but, the fact he’s only won one of their last 10 encounters suggests, and that ATP Doha thrashing, suggests he may only be a danger on his preferred clay courts.

Nishikori

The Japanese player did cause Djokovic some problems in their first few encounters but, having won their last 4 matches, Djokovic seems to have worked this opponent out.

Raonic

The big-server could be a danger to anyone and, having just beaten Roger Federer in the ATP Brisbane final, you could give him a chance. However, he’s 0/5 against Djokovic – and has won just one set against him.

Ferrer

The Spaniard seems to play better towards the end of the season, and suffered a shock defeat to Marchenko in Doha. Hasn’t beaten Djokovic in his last 10 attempts.

Tsonga

The big-hitting Frenchman often performs well at the Grand Slams, but will surely need a perfect performance to beat Djokovic having won just 1 of their last 11 encounters.

Tip

Djokovic is just 10/11 to win the Australian Open but, considering he’s won 4 of the last 5, looks sure to arrive in peak form, and has an unbelievable record against his fellow players, it’s hard to argue against him winning even at a shade of odds-on.
