Floyd Mayweather And Conor McGregor ‘Superfight’

It has been confirmed this week after months of negotiation and speculation that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will be going head-to-head in a Las Vegas ‘superfight’. It is due to be held on August 26.

Floyd Mayweather is widely seen as the greatest boxer of his generation, while Conor McGregor is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion. They will be fighting for their place as the winner later this year over the course of 12 rounds. It is predicted to generate profits to the tune of £500 million, and potentially more. The event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena, and will be the first time that Mayweather has fought in the past two years since his retirement.

For McGregor, it will be his first time ever boxing professionally, and he will be facing Mayweather at the light to middleweight limit of 154lb. It is claimed by UFC president Dana White that McGregor is due to earn around £78.5 million from the fight, and Mayweather will likely see his income come in even higher than this. Originally both men said they wanted at least £78 million each to fight. It has taken over a year of back-and-forth negotiations to arrive at the point that they will consider entering the ring together.

McGregor won his UFC lightweight title thanks to the second round of his fight with Eddie Alvarez last November, in which he managed to end the fight through the tenacity of his fists. He is also the former featherweight champion with the same organisation. Mayweather is a renowned name within the boxing world, having won all 49 of his professional boxing fights during his career. He retired in September 2015 after a win over Andre Berto, but although he is 40-years-old, he is already training hard for his return to the ring.

McGregor is 12 years his junior, but as many previous fights have shown, age is often just a number and doesn’t always correlate with stamina. Often experience and boxing skill can play a greater role. That said, when Anthony Joshua, 27, took on 41-year-old Wladimir Klitschko earlier this year, the Ukrainian professional boxer eventually lost the fight, despite a lengthy battle to keep hold of the win.

There’s every chance that the younger McGregor may follow a similar route to victory as Anthony Joshua. Incidentally, the rumour mill has been in overworks about whether Joshua will be fighting at the same ‘superfight’ in August. It has been reported that Stipe Miocic has offered a fight on the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather undercard with Joshua.

McGregor may be the underdog against one of boxing’s most famous names, but he has a record of 21 wins and 3 losses on his side. That said, the Irish mixed martial arts wonder-boy has new rules to adapt to; compared with his UFC fights, he won’t be allowed to kick and grapple and must instead adopt the much stricter boxing rules.

The hyped up fight will not only draw fans and attention to the ring, but also to the many betting sites that will be covering it. Already the odds are on across a number of sites. These will inevitably change as time progresses, especially closer to the fight and during the match. These range across the board, but for Mayweather the average is currently around 1/9 or 1/12 with some fluctuations either side of this. The best are at around 1/7 to 1/6.
