This week the European Tour returns to Wentworth, England for its flagship event the BMW PGA Championship, and many think it’s already over bar the shouting such is Rory McIlroy’s star in the ascendancy.
However, to win this week, McIlroy will have to defend a title for the first time in his career.
He’s also suggested he’s got one eye on next week’s Irish Open which is in his home country of Northern Ireland – and those two things are enough to put me off wanting to back him at odds of 11/4.
Another British player who’s been in excellent form recently is Justin Rose who followed his runner-up finish in last month’s Masters by winning the Zurich Classic, a tournament very close to his heart with the charity work he and his wife are involved in.
His form has understandably dipped a little since, but I expect him to bring his “A” game this week in an attempt to win this prestigious tournament in which he has already twice finished runner-up in.
A second English player Danny Willett is also part of the staking plan this week. His tournament figures read 5/MC/43/32/63, however he has suffered some untimely injury worries and corresponding losses of form in conjunction with those appearances, and this much improved and full-of-confidence player is expected to be challenging come Sunday.
If you’re thinking of dismissing him on those form figures, then note McIlroy’s where MC/5/48/24/MC/MC before he won it last year.
The final outright selection of the week falls to Brandon Grace as the South African powerhouse certainly has no problem winning and has already posted a 5th placed finish here from three attempts, and has been playing solidly on the PGA Tour recently.
The final part of the staking plan is Francesco Molinari to finish in the top-10 as, having finished 7/9/7 in the last 3 years, and having returned to form just in time with a runner-up spot in Spain last week, he looks sure to give us a good run for our money.
