Another close call last week, as for the third week running we had a runner in the final group, only to have to settle for another big priced runner in Thomas Pieters, but some more profit all the same.
This week the European Tour heads to Qatar for the Qatar Masters, whilst the PGA Tour takes in the Farmers Insurance Open, and both tournaments look worth tackling. Get your bets on early for the Qatar Masters though, as the tournament starts Wednesday and finishes Saturday.
Plenty of players who play Links golf well, surprisingly, have a great record in this desert swing event, and the last 5 winners, Branden Grace, Sergio Garcia, Chris Wood, Paul Lawrie and Thomas Bjorn showcase that perfectly.
1 point each-way Thomas Bjorn @ 60/1 (Bet365, Betfred) ¼ odds 5 places
The ageing Dane will have fond memories of playing in the winning 2014 Ryder Cup team, and if he’s to have any chance of playing in this year’s team he’ll have to pick-up a tournament or two soon. Last week’s 11th in Abu Dhabi suggested that he’s been putting in some serious practise, and the 2011 champion could well double-up in this weaker event if in a similar mood.
1 point each-way Mikko Illonen @ 66/1 (Various bookies) ¼ odds 5 places
In finishing 22nd in Abu Dhabi, a tournament he rarely does well in, Illonen suggested he might be about to hit form here as he did in 2013 and 2014. He finished 9th and 2nd then, and a bold bid is expected.
1 point each-way Rafa Cabrero-Bello @ 40/1 (Bet Victor, Paddy Power) ¼ odds 5 places
The Spaniard has twice finished 3rd here in the last 5 years, and both those performances have come after showing plenty of game in Abu Dhabi the week before. 14th last week was a decent performance, and he could easily hit the frame again, and will surely add another victory to his CV before too long.
Farmers Insurance Open
Plenty of players have performed well here on several occasions, but one player looks to standout this week.
2 points each-way Brandt Snedeker @ 20/1 (Stan James) ¼ odds 6 places
Snedeker has started the year with two solid performances, finishing 3rd and 2nd, and he’s often gone close in this event when in form, boasting four top-3 finishes (one win) in 9 appearances.
