The PGA Tour heads to Ohio this week, where the Workday Charity Open takes place at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. It’s a venue that’s synonymous with its designer Jack Nicklaus and the Memorial Tournament, which will also take place at the course next week.
That means there is plenty of course form for us to consider this week, with a world-class field featuring the likes of Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, and Justin Rose.
World number two John Rahm is the highest-ranked player in the field in the absence of Rory McIlroy, but the Spaniard missed the cut on his only previous visit and, seemingly, has no affinity for the course. World number five Justin Thomas is this week’s favourite and he’s finished in the top-eight on two of his last three visits. But he missed the cut two weeks ago after posting two top-10s in his first two tournaments after the Covid-19 lockdown.
Justin Rose also missed the cut two weeks ago but was in decent form before that having finished third and 14th on his previous two starts. He also has an excellent record at Muirfield Village having posted seven top-8 finishes in 12 tournaments there.
Hideki Matsuyama won at Muirfield Village on his course debut six years ago and he has posted two other top-6 finishes since. He was in decent form before the PGA Tour suspension and finished 21st on his last start. He could be looking to peak this week.
Matt Kuchar is another with a good record at this week’s venue, with a win among his five top-8 finishes in his last 11 visits. However, this normally consistent placer has finished no better than 41st in his last two tournaments.
Kevin Streelman is a hard golfer to catch at the right time, but he’s finished in the top-8 on three of his last nine visits. He’s also twice finished second in his last six tournaments and could reward each-way money if on his game this week.
But our Workday Charity Open tip is Patrick Cantlay. He won last year’s Memorial Tournament at this venue after also finishing fourth the previous season. He’s not been playing much of late but, after still managing to finish 11th on his only post-suspension appearance, he’s expected to reward each-way support this week.
