Analysis

The 2020 St Jude Invitational is this week’s biggest golf tournament om either side of the Atlantic and most of the world’s top players are in attendance.

TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennesse is the venue for the 2020 St Jude Invitational for the second consecutive year, but the course was also used for the FedEx St Jude Classic before that, giving us a decent book of form to consider.

This Ron Prichard design is a Par 70 measuring just over 7,200 yards. It features narrow fairways and fast greens that are smaller than those in use most weeks on the PGA Tour. Doglegs feature on nine holes, while water features on 10.

The winners at TPC Southwind have a mixed look over the years, with the course not particularly lending itself to power or accuracy. Hitting plenty of greens in regulation helps but a solid short game can also save you.

New world number one Jon Rahm is the favourite at up to 11/1 (12.00) with most bookies this week, and it’s easy to see why after his commanding win at the Memorial Tournament. He’s nicely rested after a week off and a WGC will be high on his wish list. The Spaniard opened with a 62 last-year before finishing seventh and is unlikely to be far away.

Rory McIlroy finished fourth last year and is the second favourite this week. He’s yet to hit full stride this season but could find extra motivation for this big event. Bryson DeChambeau has finished no better than 45th here, while Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay could easily improve on last year’s tied-12th.

Xander Schauffele (27th) is another looking to improve on last year, while Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland are debutants looking to make an instant impact.

If you’re looking for world-class players that look overpriced this week, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka fit the bill. Sure, the pair have looked woefully out of form in recent tournaments, but 33/1 is an insult considering they can click back into form at any time – and this a WGC. Johnson is also a two-time winner here, while Koepka won last year.

But I’m going to take a chance on another player that loves this course in Daniel Berger, who won his first two tournaments in consecutive years at TPC Southwind and he’s already a winner this season.
