Analysis

TPC Harding Park is this week’s venue for the 102nd US PGA Championship. The course is situated in San Francisco and makes its debut as a major venue. Willie Watson & Sam Whiting designed TPC Harding Park, which was renovated in 2014 to bring it up to the modern standards needed for it to be allowed to host a major. The course plays at over 7,200 yards and water features on seven of the holes.

But TPC Harding Park has staged some interesting events in the past, including the WGC-American Express Championship in 2005, which was won by Tiger Woods. Woods also won all five of his matches when the 2009 Presidents Cup was played at TPC Harding Park.

TPC Harding last staged an important event in 2015, when Rory McIlroy won the WGC Cadillac Match Play. There didn’t seem to be much trouble on that occasion, but PGA officials have promised a sterner test this time, with long and straight driving expected to be an important weapon over the four days.

Past results at TPC Harding Park, as well as the course being made more difficult, also suggest the cream will rise to the top this week. But with several of the world’s top players arriving in great form, it’s a question of who do you want to put your money on?

Many punters will be happy to side with new world number one Justin Thomas after his win in last week’s WGC. But along with the likes of John Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Cantlay, his strike rate in majors is not up there with the best. It’s also been a while since Rory McIlroy claimed a major, while it’s asking a lot of Tiger Woods to win after not having much match practice this year.

Brooks Koepka is our tip for the 2020 US PGA Championship. A strike rate of four wins in his last 10 majors suggests he should be a lot shorter than 10/1, and he’s also placed a further three times. That means Koepka is a great each-way bet at a course that should play to his strengths, especially with some bookmakers offering up to 11 places. He went close to winning last week’s WGC and his stats were awesome, ranking first for greens in regulation and strokes gained on approach.
