The 2020 US Open takes place at Winged Foot Golf Club this week (17-20 September), a par-70 that measures around 7,500 yards.
Dustin Johnson will be the obvious pick for many punters and a third major could be his for the taking the way he’s playing. He also has an excellent record in the tournament and comes into the event with current form figures of 2/1/2/1.
But he’s just finished off that purple patch by winning $15 million and you need to wonder whether he’s already peaked. World number 1s also don’t have a great record in the US Open, with just Tiger Woods being successful this century, and that came at a course he knew like the back of his hand.
World number 2 John Rahm missed two cuts at the US Open before finishing third at Pebble Beach last year. This will be a different test though and he’ll be slightly disappointed by his finishing effort in the Tour Championship. That’s enough to persuade me he’s not any value at 10/1.
Only two of the US Open winners since the last one at Winged Foot in 2006 have been ranked inside the top 5 in the world, and Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy don’t have convincing records. Collin Morikawa was 35th on his debut last year but it’s asking a lot of him to win back-to-back majors.
Despite a poor record for the top-5, the last eight US Open winners were all ranked in the world’s top-24. Of the next 19 players outside of the top 5, just four make the shortlist, Daniel Berger, Webb Simpson, Tyrell Hatton, and Xander Schauffele.
Daniel Berger has had a great season already and he was sixth in the 2018 US Open. But he needs to bounce back from a poor final round in the Tour Championship. By contrast, Webb Simpson played the weekend well at East Lake and he could relish this year’s US Open test, especially if it plays firm and fast.
Tyrell Hatton is making just his fourth US Open appearance, but he already boasts a top-6 finish. He’s played some of his best-ever golf this season and he could be ready to step it up a notch.
Xander Schauffele is our US Open tip 2020. He’s also making just his fourth US Open appearance, but he’s finished fifth, sixth, and third so far. He also comes here after shooting a total that was three shots lower than anyone else in the Tour Championship, only losing on another title because of the new FedEx Cup format. He has the all-round game to conquer Winged Foot and he looks a solid each-way play.
