The winner of the 2020 FedEx Cup will be crowned at this week’s 2020 Tour Championship. The PGA Tour’s season finale is now an unusual event in which the players at the top of the FedEx Cup standings begin the tournament with a start over opponents that amassed less points throughout the season. But don’t worry, you have an extra day than normal to study the tournament, which runs from Friday 4 – Monday 7 September.
Below, you can see the starts with which each player will begin the 2020 Tour Championship.
-10 Dustin Johnson
-8 Jon Rahm
-7 Justin Thomas
-6 Webb Simpson
-5 Collin Morikawa
-4 Daniel Berger, Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama
-3 Brendon Todd, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, Xander Schauffele, Sebastian Munoz
-2 Lanto Griffin, Scottie Scheffler, Joaquin Niemann, Tyrrell Hatton, Tony Finau
-1 Kevin Kisner, Abraham Ancer, Ryan Palmer, Kevin Na, Marc Leishman
Level – Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland, Mackenzie Hughes, Cameron Champ, Billy Horschel
East Lake measures around 7,400 yards and, with scrambling difficult, hitting a high average of fairways and greens is normally high on the list of skillsets to conquer this Donald Ross designed course. But distance control is most important, as having lots of downhill puts on greens that typically slope from back-to-front and measure over 12 on the stimpmeter isn’t great for the nerves.
Dustin Johnson starts the 2020 Championship with a two-shot lead over his nearest rival and, with form figures of 2/1/2 coming into the event, it’s no surprise to see the bookies offer just 15/8 about him winning. But he doesn’t have a great East Lake record.
John Rahm has two-shots to make up on Johnson and he’ll surely better his current East Lake record of 7/11/13. But 3/1 doesn’t set the pulse racing. Justin Thomas is three-shots back, but his recent form figures of 37/49/25 doesn’t inspire confidence.
The sensational Collin Morikawa should take to the demands of East Lake but must overcome a five-shot lead on his Tour Championship debut. Bryson DeChambeau has blown easier chances here, while course specialists Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele may be too far back.
That’s why Webb Simpson is our Tour Championship tip 2020. He starts four-shots back but has three top-5s to his name here and, as he’s runaway with a couple of tournaments in recent seasons, he could make up the 4-shots starting deficit. He rates the best each-way bet at double-figure odds.
