Analysis

The 2020 Northern Trust golf tournament is the first of this year’s FedEx Cup Playoff events, where only the top-125 in the FedEx Cup standings are eligible to take part. The top-70 in the standings after this event progress to the second playoff, while only the top-30 make it through to the final at East Lake for a chance to win the $15 million first prize.

The Northern Trust has been a nomadic event in recent years, having been played at a variety of venues, meaning tournament form could be irrelevant. TPC Boston is this year’s host course, and the good news is it was a PGA Tour regular up until 2018, with 11 of the 16 winners here having been in the top-15 in the world rankings at the time of their victory.

Rory McIlroy has won here twice, while other winners include Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Bryson DeChambeau, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Charley Hoffman.

Tiger Woods has also won here, but he’s one-place outside the top-15 in the world rankings this week, but it may pay to concentrate on those ahead of him.

The English duo of Tyrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood are proven winners but have been overlooked at 60/1 and 50/1 this week. Tony Finau has been playing well lately and he looks a fair each-way bet at 33/1, having been second in 2018. 33/1 for Brooks Koepka is potentially big but he’s more motivated by majors than money.

Patrick Cantlay, Patrick Reed, and Adam Scott have yet to show their best since lockdown, while major winner Collin Morikawa may have achieved his goals and more already this season. Meanwhile, as yet, Xander Schaufelle doesn’t have the conversion rate of some of the world’s other top-10.

Dustin Johnson always has the class to win but may not be quite as hungry as others, while John Rahm played terribly here in 2018. Webb Simpson played last week and may be vulnerable to those who took last week off.

Rory McIlroy is tempting at 14/1, as he’s already claimed the FedEx Cup twice, while 12/1 about another FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas is also fair, and both Thomas and McIlroy are proven playoff winners. But Bryson DeChambeau has looked the most motivated player since lockdown and a win would see him leapfrog Thomas in the standings.
