Muirfield Village hosts its second PGA Tour tournament in succession this week (July 16-19) as it plays host to the 2020 Memorial Tournament. A much stronger field is playing this week, with the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson playing. That sets punters the dilemma of whether to go with the players that are fresh this week or stick with those that performed well at last week’s Workday Charity Open.
Bryson De Chambeau is the Memorial Tournament favourite with both firms and it’s easy to see why after his win two-weeks ago. That followed a run of near misses and he’s a past winner at Muirfield Village. But the doubt is whether he can adapt his new power-hitting to this more strategic test.
Plenty of punters will be happy to take 14/1 about Rory McIlroy this week and he could be each-way value after posting four top-10s in eight visits. But his best finish is fourth and he’ll need to find his “A” game this week. Dustin Johnson will also have his backers at 16/1 after winning his last tournament, but he’s recorded just three top-8s in 11 visits to Muirfield Village.
You don’t see 25/1+ about Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods every week, but Koepka hasn’t featured in two previous visits and was down the field here last week. Tiger last won here in 2012 and, though he was ninth last year, he’s not played any tournament golf recently.
John Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama played last week without hitting the headlines, though Rahm did close with a 64 after opening with three rounds of 70+. Daniel Berger catches the eye at around 40/1 but is another that needs to prove he can transfer his recent improvement to a course he’s not played well at before.
Justin Thomas will be an obvious pick for many punters this week after his play-off loss to Collin Morikawa, but the latter makes more appeal at twice the price after winning on his first visit to Muirfield Village.
Patrick Cantlay is our Memorial Tournament tip. Yes, he couldn’t quite land the each-way money last week, but he caught the eye with a closing 65 at a course where he’s finished 4/1/7 on his last three visits. That match practice should have set him up nicely for this week’s more prestigious event.
