The 2020 Tattersalls Gold Cup takes place over 10 furlongs at the Curragh on Sunday 26 July, when six runners are set to line-up for this prestigious Group 1 race.
Aidan O’Brien saddles half the field in his quest to win the race for the ninth time in 18 years, and his quest looks to have been made all the easier by the absence of any foreign raiders, as they’ve on four of the last seven editions.
Dermot Weld has trained four winners of the Tattersalls Gold Cup, with his latest winner Fascinating Rock winning four years ago. His runner this year is Search For A Song but she has proved better over further and shouldn’t have the necessary gears to win this on good ground.
Leo De Fury won for the second time over course and distance last time but that was in a race were all the opposition where better over further. He could still go well but must take on Buckhurst on 4lb worse terms than when beaten a neck by him last season.
That win was just one of three wins for Buckhurst over course and distance and his trainer Joseph O’Brien would love to get one over on his dad, Aidan. Buckhurst has already beaten his father’s re-opposing Sir Dragonet this year and is 3lb better off.
Sir Dragonet probably improved for that run when finishing second at Royal Ascot but he’s yet to repeat his stunning win at Chester as a 3-year-old and that year’s batch of the classic generation have proven a mainly disappointing bunch.
Armory flies the flag for this year’s bunch of Aidan O’Brien 3-year-old and he has some placed form behind useful types such as Pinatubo, Victor Ludorum, and Siskin. He steps up to 10-furlongs for the first time and could give the favourite something to think about if it suits him.
Magical is our 2020 Tattersalls Gold Cup tip. The 5-year-old filly’s form is head and shoulders above anything her rivals have done so far and she’s a model of consistency. She’s run nine times at 10-furlongs, winning seven of those and being beaten by only Crystal Ocean and Enable in the others. She also proved her well-being by giving the Irish Oaks runner-up Cayenne Pepper 12lb and a 4½ length beating on her seasonal debut. She should win easily.
