Salisbury Racecourse hosts the 2020 Sovereign Stakes on Sunday 9 August. Eight runners line up for this Group 3 race over a mile, and it looks the highlight of this weekend’s races.
Bless Him looks the least likely winner, as his last win came in a handicap off a mark of 97 and this represents a big step-up in class. The 6-year-old is also the joint-oldest horse in the line-up and is unlikely to suddenly find the improvement he needs to win.
Beat Le Bon is another horse whose last win came in a handicap and, while that was off a mark of 104, this now 110-rated 4-year-old has been beaten in Group company twice since. He has clocked some decent speed figures but the stiff track at Salisbury won’t play to those strengths.
Marie’s Diamond and Accidental Agent both ran in last season’s Sovereign Stakes. Marie’s Diamond finished last after not handling the course. But Accidental Agent put up a good performance to finish second and has an each-way squeak. But this year’s renewal looks stronger and it will be a surprise if either of them wins.
Regal Reality has run well in some big races but normally runs over 10-furlongs. The jury is out as to whether the drop back to a mile on a stiff track will be ideal, but he should relish the good to firm ground and the uphill finish.
Duke of Hazard sets a high standard on his best form, which includes finishing second in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes over 7-furlongs. He’s got even better form at a mile at Goodwood, but he’s finishing burst of speed may be blunted on this stiff track.
Motakhayyel won twice over a mile last season but has won two big handicaps over 7-furlongs this season. But he was strong at the end of both those races and could be even better stepped back up in trip. This strapping 4-year-old also has the scope to make up into a Group race performer, and it would be no surprise if he won.
Positive is our Sovereign Stakes tip, as he drops down from Group 1 company in a bid to boost his confidence. He’s been taking on the best this season on ground slower than ideal and he should be suited by the fast ground. Trainer Clive Cox also won this race in 2015 and 2016.
