Wednesday night’s Premier League match between Sheffield United and Wolves pitches two sides against each other that look to be battling it out for the last two Europa League places for next season. Wolves still have a squeak of a Champions League spot but it’s a longshot after last week’s defeat to Arsenal.
Despite that defeat, the bookies are firmly of the opinion that Wolves are the better team and have priced them up at no bigger than 6/5 (2.20) to beat Sheffield United. But there are quite a few reasons why those odds look shorter than they should be, and a Sheffield United win at nearly three-times those odds is our Sheffield United vs Wolves tip.
The bookies seem to have come up with their odds for the Sheffield United vs Wolves match based on the away form of Wolves. Admittedly, they’ve been impressive in beating relegation-strugglers Aston Villa and West Ham away from home since lockdown, but Sheffield United are only four points behind Wolves in the table.
Sheffield United did come back in poor form after lockdown, failing to score in their opening three games against Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Manchester United, losing to those last two teams 3-0. But a draw at Burnley last week was preceded by a 3-1 home win against Tottenham.
Indeed, the home form of the Blades has been excellent in the second half of the season. They’ve won five and drawn two of their last eight Premier League games at Bramhall Lane, losing only to Manchester City in that run.
Sheffield United also drew at Wolves earlier in the season, when they were playing well away from home and, with their home form now stronger, a Sheffield United win looks the value bet.
