The 2020 Senior Players Championship takes place this week, returning to the Firestone Country Club in Akron Ohio which also staged last year’s edition. Retief Goosen was the winner on that occasion with a winning score of –6 but the South African will have to see of a stellar field this season if he is to retain his title.
The unanimous favourite with the bookmakers this week is Steve Stricker, and the US Ryder Cup Captain has been brilliant since joining the Senior Tour three seasons ago, bagging five titles. Two of those were Senior majors, including a record-breaking six shot victory in the 2019 US Open.
Stricker finished sixth in his first Senior Players Championship at the course last season, while he also registered a second at Firestone in the 2012 WGC Bridgestone. The problem with backing Stricker on a course that normally suits power-hitters is his odds of just 11/2.
Stricker has several players that have been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this week. Goosen is one of those and odds of 14/1 for a repeat are fair each-way. Fred Couples (12/1), Bernard Langer (10/1), shouldn’t be far away, while Colin Montgomerie could be great value at 66/1 if he’s motivated to come back to top form for a major.
There are also several past winners of the Senior Players Championship in the field, though their victories came at different golf courses. They include Scott Mccarron, Kenny Perry, Mark O’Meara, Jay Haas, Loren Roberts, and Vijay Singh.
But it could be this year’s class of Senior Tour rookies that could cause Stricker the most problems. Angel Cabrera is a two-time major winner and odds of 300/1 may underestimate him on his Senior major debut. Darren Clarke (Open Championship) and Mike Weir (Masters) are other former major champions that could find lots of motivation as they venture into their new careers. Another notable is Miguel Angel Jimenez, who travels to America having warmed up nicely by making the cut in a couple of standard European Tour events.
But our Senior Players Championship tip goes to Ernie Els. The four-time major winner lost out to Jimenez in a playoff on his senior debut and won on his third start at the Hoag Classic. The classiest of this ageing bunch at his best, odds of 16/1 (17.00) are too tempting to resist.
