The 2020 Safeway Open kicks-off the 2020/21 PGA Tour Season, just three days after Dustin Johnson collected a cool $15 Million for winning the FedEx Cup. Unsurprisingly, with the US Open taking place next week, Johnson and the other 30 players that played last week at East Lake have decided to give the Safeway Open a miss.
The Safeway Open moved to its present home at the Silverado Resort and Spa in 2014, with the North Course being used for the event. This classical par-72 course measures just under 7,200 yards and it ranked just inside the top-half of the hardest courses used on the PGA Tour last season.
Phil Mickelson is the favourite with most bookmakers this week and his confidence should be high after the romped to victory on his first start on the Champions Tour. He has course form too, finishing 8-3-17 on his first three visits. But a missed cut last year tempers enthusiasm for the 50-year-old’s chances. Si Woo Kim shares favouritism but he hasn’t shone in his two previous starts at Silverado.
Some bookies are offering 8-places this week and a variety of players have hit the frame here since 2014. That list includes Charl Schwartzel, Martin Laird, Cameron Percy, Brandt Snedeker, Luke List, Bud Cauley, Sam Burns, Zac Blair, Chesson Hadley, and Troy Merrit, though none of the above are in the sort of form that makes them jump off the page as potential winners.
That’s why a chance is given to Cameron Davis, who is our Safeway Open tip 2020. The young Australian missed the cut here last year, but that was a terrible season for him and he’s since turned his career around. 12-months earlier he finished 17th in this event and he’s a much better player now. Davis posted two top-10s before the Covid-19 break and his latest run of form of 12/32/15/29 have marked him down as having the potential to win a weak event like this one. His strength is his consistency from tee-to-green and, as his recent putting performances rank him highly in this field, he should have the perfect skillset for Silverado.
