The 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 2-5) is this week’s PGA Tour tournament. It’s only the second edition of the event that, like last year, is being hosted by the Detroit Golf Club. The par-72 golf course measures just over 7,200 yards and its main feature is smaller than average Poa Annua greens.
It’s a noticeably weaker field than the first three events of the new PGA Tour schedule but the headline act trying to capitalize on the lack of top players is Bryson DeChambeau. The newly beefed-up multiple PGA tour winner hasn’t been out of the top-8 on his last six starts and warrants close attention in this weaker field at around 7/1.
But DeChambeau didn’t have this tournament on his schedule last year, and that lack of course knowledge and the fact this is his fourth tournament in a row may just count against him. World number six Webb Simpson also can’t be ignored after winning two of his last four tournaments but is another making his tournament debut. But he did take last week off and could come here fresher than some.
World number seven Patrick Reed finished tied fifth last year and he could go close after two top-25s in the last three weeks. Another in-form player that played well in the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic is Rory Sabbatini, who finished tied third, and he’s finished 14th and 21st in his last two events.
Players who will be looking to bounce back to form after going well here last year include Nate Lashley (winner), Wes Roach (tied 3rd), Cameron Tringale (tied 5th), and Ted Potter Jnr (Tied 5th).
Doc Redman takes the honour of being our Rocket Mortgage Classic tip this week. The 22-year-old finished an excellent second here last year and returns with his form trending nicely towards another good performance. He’s finished 21st and 11th in his last two events, and this is a much weaker field than was assembled for either of those tournaments.
