A full field of 16 runners line up for the big money, including the likes of Russian Camelot, Perfect Jewel, Fierce Impact, and Kings Will Dream.
A leading contender is former Japanese runner Fierce Impact. The son of Deep Impact is coming off a third placing in the Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick, and that was a tidy fresh-up effort.
He settled at the rear of the field throughout before launching late to finish only a short margin behind Verry Elleegant and Star of the Seas. It’s Group 1 form that should stack up nicely at this level, and he is proven in the top grades.
Fierce Impact is a two-time winner with a run under his belt, and given the odds available, punters shouldn’t discount his chances of success.
Perfect Jewel is a rising star of the turf, and although she’s a six-year-old, we’ve yet to see her best efforts. The daughter of Redoute’s Choice owns eight wins from 23 starts, including a last-start win at Caulfield.
The Williams-trained mare was a length too good for the opposition, and although it was a much easier race than what she faces on Saturday, it was an impressive outing.
Her biggest asset this week is drawing barrier two, which will allow jockey William Pike to get the perfect trip in transit. She should be able to soak up the early speed, peel out at the top of the straight, and hit the line with purpose over the 1600m.
We would have liked longer odds for Perfect Jewel, but she is a capable mare that shouldn’t be overlooked at Group 1 level.
Russian Camelot is the race favourite, and although he has had only five career starts, he’s a promising animal. The four-year-old won the South Australian Derby at his most recent effort, and he won it with ease.
However, that win came over 2500m, so he is dropping in distance and he hasn’t raced or had a trial since May. Adding to the uncertainty are his race manners, which can include missing the jump and racing erratically throughout the run.
He looks to have overcome those issues and the mile is a good starting point, but we’re not sure if he’s forward enough to beat this quality field.
A runner that should attract interest at double-figure odds is Kings Will Dream. It was only a couple of years ago that he almost lost his life, so any result is good for connections.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding was huge when third at Caulfield last start, and he could add value to multiples at the juicy odds.
Our top pick is Fierce Impact. He is proven at this level and he scored a win at his only Caulfield start, which gives us plenty of confidence.
