One of the joys of betting on the English Premier League is finding a team that you think will perform better than last season and then finding the right market to back them in. One market that makes plenty of appeal this season is the Top 10 Finish.
Most bookies aren’t willing to offer odds on the teams that occupied the top-8 places last season, which suggests 12 teams are playing for just two places in the top-half of the table. Last season’s ninth and tenth-placed finishers were Sheffield United and Burnley. They owe those high finishes to their managers, but it could be asking a lot of them to maintain those standards without much activity in the transfer market.
Anything below a top-half of the table finish for Everton in Carlo Ancelotti’s second season in charge will be viewed as a failure at Goodison Park, but odds-on quotes may overestimate the Toffees. Leeds are also short in the market but have something to prove as they step-up in class. Meanwhile, the other two promoted teams Fulham and West Brom are fancied to be relegated.
Of the others, not many teams jump off the page as being capable of being able to make the transition from bottom-half teams to top-half teams. That means West Ham, Brighton, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa may all be more fancied to be involved in the battle for relegation than improving on last year’s finishing positions of between 13th and 17th.
Southampton are our tip for a Premier League Top 10 Finish. Southampton were odds-on to be relegated after Southampton had won just 8 points from their opening 12 games last season, but Ralph Hassenhutl shrugged off the pressure of a 9-0 defeat by Leicester to guide Southampton to twelfth with a total of 52 points.
That means Southampton won an excellent 44 points from their remaining 26 games. That’s an average of 1.69 points a game for that period, form which would have been good enough to finish fifth if they could have managed it for the entire season.
Southampton were also at their best after lockdown, when they returned with five wins, three draws, and one defeat in their final nine games. That’s two-points a game, which would have been good enough to finish third. Southampton play just two of the big-six sides in their opening games this season and a good start is expected with confidence sure to be high at St Mary’s.
