While many punters will stick to trying to pick the winner of the 2020/21 Premier League, choosing who will be relegated can often give you a season’s entertainment at rewarding odds.
Plenty of punters last season thought that Norwich, Aston Villa, and Sheffield United would all go straight back down to the Championship, but only Norwich were relegated. Aston Villa survived on goal difference, while last year’s relegation favourites Sheffield United smashed-up the handicaps by amassing 54 points.
It will be interesting to see if Sheffield United prove to be one-year wonders but, if they keep Chris Wilder, I can’t see them going down. Sean Dyche is another manager who produces miracles with what he’s got, and Burnley will be hoping he guides them to safety once more.
You can also add plenty of other teams to list of those that should survive the dreaded drop, including Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Wolves, and Everton. Leicester finished last season poorly but should also be good enough to stay up, while the way Southampton finished last season suggests a top half of the table finish beckons.
Money can’t buy everything but, after taking a few seasons to return to the top-flight, Leeds are also expected to stay there. If Leeds do stay up, that means one of the more established teams will go down. Aston Villa looks obvious candidates but it’s only a few weeks since they took eight points from their last 12 games to survive, meaning confidence should be high.
West Ham matched Villa’s eight points haul form their last four games and better is expected this season. Brighton also strung together some good late results and Graham Potter may get a bit more out of the Seagulls in his second season in charge.
Newcastle finished the season poorly and they may struggle to win as many points off the big-six as they did last season, with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham all bolstering their squads.
Crystal Palace could be in the most danger, as they only broke a run of seven straight defeats by claiming a point on the final day of last season. 9/4 (3.25) for Crystal Palace is the most tempting price about one of the established teams going down.
But I do think you’re playing for one place, with Fulham and West Brom looking weak teams. Fulham capitalised on a good finish to last season to get promoted via the play-offs but have done little to strengthen their squad.
West Bromwich Albion are our Premier League relegation tip, as they finished last season with just three wins in their last 12 games. That’s nowhere near good enough to survive the Premier League and they’ve also failed to add any strength in depth in the transfer market.
