The 2020/21 English Premier League season kicks-off on Saturday 12 September and the question on everyone’s lips is who is going to win the title. The bookies are offering 200/1 bar Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham and it’s hard to see the winner coming from beyond the big-6.
Manchester City – 5/6 (1.83)
City are odds-on to claim a 10th title in 10 years, but I can’t see why so many punters are putting their faith in Pep Guardiola’s team. Okay, so they’re brilliant at their best, but last year’s total of 81 points was below any of their tallies when taking the title. The loss of Vincent Kompany remains a defensive blow, and I think they’ll miss David Silva even more.
Liverpool – 9/4 (3.25)
There’s been much talk about the fact Liverpool haven’t been very busy in the transfer market, but there’s little wrong with a squad that has amassed 196 points in the last two seasons, 17 more than Manchester City and streets clear of the rest. They did hit a flat spot late last season, when faced with winning their first Premier League title, but could be even better this season.
Chelsea 11/1 (12.00)
Chelsea’s transfer activity is exciting for fans of the Blues and Stamford Bridge could be an entertaining place this season. Frank Lampard has brought in plenty of attacking talent in Havertz, Werner, and Ziyech, while Thiago and Chillwell will bolster the defence. They look the team most likely to close the gap on the top two if Lampard has the tactical skills to utilise his new assets.
Manchester United 16/1 (17.00)
Bruno Fernandes got Old Trafford buzzing again at the end of last season and the arrival of Donny van De Beek is another feather in the cap of Ole Gunner Solskjaer. But the Man United manager may still need more time before filling the shoes of his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson.
Arsenal 40/1 (41.00)
Eighth place simply wasn’t good enough from the Gunners last season, but confidence is now high at the Emirates after FA Cup and Community Shield victories. Mikel Arteta looks to have learned lots from his time as assistant to Pep Guardiola and the Gunners should be challenging for a top-4 spot this season.
Tottenham 66/1 (67.00)
I’m not the biggest Jose Mourinho fan but surely even he deserves a bit more luck with injuries this season. But Tottenham look too reliant on Harry Kane to score goals and tend to bottle it when in contention.
Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal are expected to step-up on last season but may still struggle to close the gap on the top two. Man City are favourites but, after a below-average points haul last season, Liverpool look the value. The 3/1 we got last season isn’t available, but 9/4 (3.25) is bigger odds than I was expecting about our Premier League winner tip.
