The 2020 Portugal Masters (September 10-13) is this week’s European Tour event. Established in 2007, the tournament returns to the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura. The course measures just over 7,200 yards and its resort-style wide fairways and big greens have seen the professionals notch-up winning scores of between –14 and –25.
Steven Brown won last year’s tournament and he is one of four course winners in this year’s field. His win came as a bit of a shock last year after missing the cut the previous year, but the other winners had shown some previous decent form in the event before winning.
That puts me off the short-priced favourite Tommy Fleetwood. He is the class act in the field, but he’s finished no better than 13th on his five previous visits, and he’s not been at his best since the lockdown.
George Coetzee is the second favourite this week and the South African has been performing well in lower-class events of late. That confidence could do him the world of good on his return to a course where he’s posted three top-7s, but 18/1 is hardly a steal for a player that finds winning at the top-level difficult.
Marcus Kinhult has been steady of late, posting three top-15 finishes, and plenty will have the Swede in their staking plans this week after he finished fourth last season. Adrien Saddier tied with Kinhult in fourth last season but, after a quiet time of late, you can have a 125/1 about the Frenchman.
Jamie Donaldson is another player who’s posted three top-15s recently and the Welshman will be looking to continue his return from injury with another good finish at a course where he finished no worse than eighth between 2011 and 2013.
Chris Paisley boasts even better course form after finishing fifth in both 2013 and 2019 and he posted a top-3 finish in the UK swing. He sidestepped last week’s brutal challenge at Valderama and may benefit from that.
But the two players that could offer the best value this week look to be the South African pair of Brandon Stone and Justin Walters. Both are hit and miss but Brandon Stone finished second here last season and his two European Tour wins have come with scores of –20 and –21.
Justin Walters just pips Stone as our each-way tip for the Portugal Masters. He finished second at the Belfry two weeks ago and he’s twice finished second here. He’s also capable of shooting low scores and gets the nod at a big price.
