The 2019/20 Europa League competition kicks-off again on Thursday 5 August and we think we’ve found a cracking bet.
English teams dominated Europe last season, with Chelsea and Arsenal contesting the Europa League final, while Liverpool beat Tottenham to win the Champions League. That why it’s no surprise to see Manchester United installed as the favourites to lift the trophy.
They’ve been a much better team since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, but the worry is they were hammered by Chelsea in the FA Cup semis. That may have been a touch of fatigue after securing a Champions League place for next season, but that also means they now don’t need to win the Europa League to get back into the main competition.
2/1 also looks too short for Manchester United, who still need to beat three opponents to lift the trophy. All matches will also be played on neutral grounds in Germany, making winning more difficult.
Wolves are the only other English team left in the Europa League, but they won’t be playing in Europe at all next season if they don’t win the Europa League. But this has been a hard season for Wolves, who had to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League back in July and they’ve been battling hard on many fronts for 12 months. There’s also plenty of transfer talk about Raul Jimenez, which can’t be good for morale at Molineux.
Serie A runners-up Inter Milan are a danger to all after dropping into this competition after finishing third in the Champions League group stages behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, Sevilla look another possible danger to our Europa League tip.
Bayer Leverkusen looks the Europa League value bet at this stage, with the German team suddenly handed a big advantage with the remainder of the tournament being held in Germany. They’ll be frustrated at the end of what has been a decent season for them, having lost to our Champions League fancies Bayern Munich in the German Cup Final.
They also just lost out on a Champions League spot for next season by finishing fifth in the Bundesliga, but they could rectify that by winning the Europa League. The fact Kai Havertz is available after a move to Chelsea failed to materialise is a major boost for them, as he’s scored 17 goals this season.
