The 2019/2020 Champions League gets underway again this week, and the big question punters are asking is which of the remaining 12 teams will lift the trophy?
Chelsea have the toughest task, as they must overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Bayern Munich just to make the quarterfinals.
Lyon (100/1) could easily make the quarters as they hold a 1-0 lead over Juventus from the first leg. But there’s been no French football for five months and, even if they beat Juventus, a lack of match practice may cost them dear when playing either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the quarters. Juventus may pose more of a threat with Ronaldo, but the Italian Champions have not looked at their best since lockdown.
Napoli (75/1) must win at the Nous Camp to progress to the quarterfinals but, while that’s not impossible, it’s their recent lack of goals that suggests they won’t be able to beat the three other top-class teams they’ll need to lift the trophy. Barcelona (10/1) have been regressive this season and they’ll need talisman Lionel Messi to return to his best.
RB Leipzig (16/1) and Atletico Madrid (9/1) clash in the first of the quarterfinals and it’s an interesting match-up. Atletico will set up in their usual defensive way, while RB Leipzig love to play attacking football. But Atletico showed what they’re capable of doing against attacking sides when beating Liverpool so, with Leipzig having lost Timo Werner, Atletico are fancied to win this tie. However, they may struggle in the semis.
Atalanta (11/1) and PSG (11/2) are the other two teams already in the quarterfinals. Both teams like to play attacking football, and Atalanta have the advantage of having had plenty of recent match practice. This match could be a joy to watch but defensive frailties may cost the winner later in the tournament.
The Spanish Champions Real Madrid (25/1) can beat anyone on a given day but they need to win 2-0 or 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium to knockout last-16 opponents Manchester City after losing their home leg 2-1. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City (3/1) have plenty of class but have yet to learn how to win this most coveted prize.
Bayern Munich are our Champions League tip. A run of 17 wins in all competitions means their confidence will be sky high. As English teams meeting in last year’s final, it must also bode well for the German’s chances that they’ve humbled Tottenham and Chelsea already in the competition.
