This week’s Open de Portugal (Sept 17-20) gives the European Tour players that haven’t qualified for the US Open a chance to shine in a tournament that is a joint venture with the Challenge Tour.
This established tournament is being hosted for the first time by the Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort. The course is the brainchild of the late Seve Ballesteros and is described as a truly exceptional 6,400 metres course that offers golfers of all levels to play on undulating terrain.
The stunning Obidos Lagoon provides a stunning backdrop to some of the holes, while the Atlantic Ocean provides the backdrop to holes 10-18. A long 18th hole should also set up an interesting finish, if there are several players in close contention.
That all sounds great but picking the winner in what will be one of the weakest fields on the European Tour this week will not be easy.
This week’s field is so weak that last week’s winner George Coetzee has been installed as the 4/1 favourite. He has won two of his last three tournaments, but George strikes me as the kind of player that will have been celebrating last week’s win in style. He may just have the class and current confidence to see of this weak field – but the odds are cramped.
Maybe Jamie Donaldson will complete his return from injury with a win or Craig Howie may step-up on his recent top-5 finish. Liam Johnston is a possibility at a bigger price, as he looks quite juicy odds considering two recent top-15 finishes at a higher level.
But I’ll give a chance to Gonzalez Fernando-Castano, who is our Open de Portugal tip. The Spaniard has won seven times on the European Tour, fending off top-class players such as Francesco Molinari, Lee Westwood, and Henrik Stenson to take some of those titles.
Admittedly, the last of those wins came in 2013, after which he’s been plagued by injuries. But there was much to like about his performance in last week’s Portugal Masters, where rounds of 71, 69, 68, and 68 saw him finish in a tie for 14th. He gets to play another resort course this week in a weaker field and, as the Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort was designed by his idol Seve Ballesteros, he may just find the extra motivation he needs to clinch another title.
