The Memsie Stakes is the first Group 1 race on the Melbourne Spring Carnival calendar and it runs this Saturday. We’re taking a final-field look at Caulfield feature, which boasts a field of 15 high-quality thoroughbreds from around Australia.
Much like many Group 1 contests in Melbourne, bookmakers have framed an even market. Behemoth is the current favourite following his victory in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville a fortnight ago.
The five-time winner has yet to face a field of this quality, but he is a classy son of All Too Hard and he deserves his place in the field. However, he lives up to his name and because he’s so big, getting off the fence from barrier two could be problematic.
A runner that could battle Behemoth for favouritism is fellow last-start winner, Savatiano. The James Cummings-trained mare defeated a similar field at Caulfield and she is unbeaten on this track from two attempts.
She is always well-supported in betting markets and given her record of 10 wins from 33 starts, we’re not surprised. Money typically comes for her on race day, so expect a betting push this weekend.
Arcadia Queen hails from the Williams’ stable and she could be crowned the new star of the turf. Her reputation since winning the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic has taken a bit of a hit, but she is worth sticking with.
She beat only one runner home in The Everest before finishing fifth in two subsequent starts. However, she was making good ground behind Savatiano last start and she will be better for the run.
Not much improvement will be needed for Arcadia Queen to cross the line first this week, so we wouldn’t leave her out of calculations.
Trainer Peter Moody is no stranger to the headlines and he has made a bold claim for his runner. Glenfiddich is a three-year-old taking on the older horses for the first time, but Moody has been bullish about his chances.
The well-bred son of Fastnet Rock finished second at Group 1 level last start. It was an age-group contest and we’re not sure how that form stacks up against proven performers. However, he gets a significant weight advantage.
Glenfiddich carries 50.5kg for the Memsie Stakes, which is 6.5kg less than the mares and 8.5kg less than the geldings. He is a runner that could figure in the finish purely based on the weights.
We have yet to highlight Mystic Journey, who is our tip for the Memsie Stakes. The inaugural All-Star Mile winner appears to be down on her best form, but there was plenty to like about her run at Caulfield last start.
The Adam Trinder-trained mare had no luck in the run and improved track conditions are right up her alley. She is no stranger to winning at Caulfield and she owns three wins from four starts over the 1400m distance.
With $3.7 million locked up, she doesn’t have anything left to prove. However, punters are getting double-figure odds and she is the clear value pick.
