Manchester City vs Liverpool is the Premier League’s big Thursday night game (July 2), and there’s an irony that a clash between the top two teams in England means little with seven games of the season remaining. But despite Liverpool having already won the title, note I said it means little rather than nothing.
Man City are still looking for the few points that will guarantee Champions League football next season, should they overturn the ban from the competition that UEFA recently hit them with. Meanwhile, Liverpool may also want to finish the season in style by usurping City as the team that won the Premier League with most points. Hopefully, that means this will be an open game and the tip is for there to be more than 3.5 goals.
Man City may have lost their Premier League title, but they still have two trophies on their mind as they’re still in the FA Cup and the Champions League. That means Pep Guardiola could rest key players but that only raises hopes that this will be an open game.
Liverpool, already out of the FA Cup and Champions League could also rest players, but there’s a good chance that the club’s main players will want to face the team they usurped as champions.
Both teams have certainly shown their attacking prowess since the break, with City scoring five goals against Burnley and Liverpool battering the in-form Crystal Palace 4-0 last time.
There have also been some awesome games between the two sides in recent seasons, with Liverpool winning this season’s reverse fixture 3-1 at Anfield. There was also a total of 12 goals in the two games two seasons ago, while the pair fought-out another magnificent two-legged Champions League affair not long ago.
Pep and Jurgen may play mind games in the build-up to this match, but the gut-feeling is both managers are far too competitive to let the other one win easily. Let’s just hope it’s a goal-fest.
