The July Stakes (Thursday 9 July, 15.00) is a Group 2 race over 6-furlongs. It has been won by useful types such as Advertise and Shalaa in recent seasons and only time will tell if there is a horse in this year’s line-up that can later take the step-up to Group 1 company.
Escape Route, Jimmy Sparks, and Rebel At Dawn all won class 5 races last time and need to take another step forward. Meanwhile, Choritzo and Lauded lost their unbeaten records in the same race at Royal Ascot, and possibly look up against it.
Swiss Ace represents last year’s winning trainer Aidan O’Brien and he could be anything after justifying favoritism on his only racecourse start. He’s beautifully bred and market money would be interesting with Ryan Moore riding here rather than at York.
Qaader also lost his unbeaten record at Royal Ascot but he was just run out of it in the closing stages in the race that Choritzo and Lauded also ran in. Having been a well-backed that day, he will probably go close here.
But the race from Royal Ascot to concentrate on should be the Windsor Castle Stakes in which Tactical (first), Yazaman (second), and Victory Heights (sixth) all ran. Tactical has been installed as second favourite by the bookies, but he did have the best of the draw that day in stall-20, while Yazaman and Victory Heights were drawn on the opposite side. Both these horses covered much more ground by being dropped out and pulled across to the stands rail and should relish the step-up to 6-furlongs.
Yazaman is our July Stakes tip, as he met all kinds of trouble in running before snatching second of late. The stable of William Haggas is also in full flow now and this son of speedster Kodiac looks a cracking each-way bet at the odds.
