Newmarket Racecourse stages its third and final day of its Moet and Chandon July Festival on Saturday 11 July. The highlight is the Group 1 July Cup that is run over 6-furlongs. It features a clash of both the 6-furlong Group 1 winners of Royal Ascot, with plenty of the strong supporting cast not ruled out.
Aidan O’Brien is bidding for a July Cup hat-trick, but his challenger Southern Hills need to take a big step forward from Royal Ascot. Ireland looks to have a much better chance with Sceptical and Frankie Dettori is back in the saddle after he finished third at Royal Ascot.
Hello Youmzain finished half-a-length in front of Sceptical, with Khadeem in fourth, when winning that Group 1 and he’s boxed in stall-12, like the last two winners. His trainer Kevin Ryan also saddles Brando whose finished runner-up in this race before, but he’s looked regressive recently.
Threat is another interesting runner as he was a group winner over 6-furlongs as a 2-year-old. He tried a mile at Royal Ascot but, after not staying there, he returns to sprinting. But he is held by Golden Horde on last year’s form and that horse has improved since.
Golden Horde is our July Cup tip, as he looked a tremendous sprinting prospect when winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
The form of that race has yet to be tested but his trainer Clive Cox has put him in the same box at home as his two previous winners of that race, Lethal Force and Harry Angel, which is a tip to how highly he regards him. Lethal Force is also Golden Horde’s sire, and it could be a case of like father like son with the Cox stable firing in loads of winners already during July.
