The 2020 Irish Open (24-27 September) is this week’s European Tour event and it takes place at the Galgorm Castle Golf Club in Northern Ireland. A parkland course measuring just over 7,000 yards, Galgorm will be a much different test to the links course that many recent Irish Opens have been played on.
Galgorm is also making its debut as an Irish Open venue, but there are eight seasons of Challenge Tour events to give us some clues as to what we might expect this week. The winning scores on the Challenge Tour have varied between –6 and –19 but, with not much wind forecast throughout the competition, the winning score is expected to be quite low. There’s also quite a bit of rain forecast on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, so this may soften up the greens and make it even more of a birdie-fest.
If you’re the type of punter that likes to play at the top of the market, your eyes are instantly drawn to the Open Champion Shane Lowry. He did achieve his finest moment on a links course, but he’s also played well at many other types of golf courses. The problem with Lowry is his short odds, and 8/1 isn’t big enough to tempt me this week.
George Coetzee is second favourite at 11/1 and he deserves to be after four consecutive top-3 finishes, two of which have been wins. However, there are a few decent players in the field this week.
Other in-form players include Connor Syme, Wilco Nienabar, and Laurie Canter, but they’re all priced up lower than some proven winners and I can let them win at the prices on offer.
Ryan Fox (22/1) is the third favourite this week and the Kiwi is interesting having won the 2016 Challenge Tour event here with a winning score of –19. That was a better winning score than the 2016 winner Joakim Lagergren (55/1)) and the 2017 winner Robin Sciot-Siegrist (125/1). Both those players are tempting at bigger odds but just fall short of being this week’s European Tour tip.
This week’s Irish Open tip is Calum Hill who won the 2019 event at Galgorm Castle, also with a winning total of –19. The Scotsman has followed recent two top-10 finishes with two missed cuts but, after a week off, he’s fancied to bounce back to form at a course he’ll have fond memories of.
